* On July 27, 1960, Vice President Richard M. Nixon was nominated for president on the first ballot at the Republican National Convention in Chicago.

* In 1789, President George Washington signed a measure establishing the Department of Foreign Affairs, the forerunner of the Department of State.

* In 1866, Cyrus W. Field finished laying the first successful under water telegraph cable between North America and Europe. A previous cable had burned out after only a few weeks’ use in 1858.

* In 1909, during the first official test of the U.S. Army’s first airplane, Orville Wright flew himself and a passenger, Lt. Frank Lahm, above Fort Myer, Virginia, for one hour and 12 minutes.

* In 1940, Bugs Bunny made his “official” debut in the Warner Brothers animated cartoon A Wild Hare.

* Louis Prima has received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The big-band leader, who died in 1978, was honored Sunday at a ceremony attended by his son, Louis Prima, Jr., who continues the legacy of his father’s music. and his daughter Lena Prima.

* Wyclef Jean, the hip-hop singer, told CNN that he is thinking of running for president of Haiti.

* Hugh Laurie, the lead actor on the TV series House, has signed a record deal to record an album of New Orleans-inspired Blues music.
