COLUMBUS, O. — The Los Angeles Kings on paper would appear to be one of the best teams in the National Hockey League.

At times they seem unbeatable. Other times they play inconsistent hockey, can’t string together two victories.

Just when people count them out as done for a season, the Kings emerge into the playoffs and a serious Stanley Cup contender. Proof, they have won two of the last three Cups.

Tuesday night, the Blue Jackets learned that the Kings came to play and would not be denied a win.

LA’s top line of Dwight King, Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli all scored goals en route to a 4-3 win before a crowd of 14,703 at Nationwide Arena. That line shot the puck a total of 10 times.

The Blue Jackets led briefly 1-0 on a goal by Jack Skille at 1:40 of the first period.

But the Kings had an answer everytime the Jackets got close on the scoreboard.

One bright spot in the game for Columbus was LW Scott Hartnell played in his 1,000th career NHL game. Only 27 current active players and 297 overall have ever achieved this honor in the game’s history. It was only fitting that Hartnell scored a goal in the contest.

Also scoring in the game were LA’s Dustin Brown and the CBJ’s David Savard.

The National Hockey League holds its annual draft lottery tonight, and the Florida Panthers, who finished with a record of 15-27-6 and 36 points, have the best odds of winning. Florida’s chances are at 25 percent, followed by Colorado at 19 percent.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are the NHL’s top non-playoff team and their chances of winning is at 1-in-200 of winning the lottery. If they don’t, the Jackets will pick 14th. Columbus also has two other first-round picks from the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings.

The draft lottery determines the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the NHL’s amateur draft on June 30.

All 14 teams that missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs have a shot at the #1 overall pick.

Have you ever wondered how the Los Angeles Kings are winning games despite being the lowest-scoring team in the NHL?

It’s the play of goaltender Jonathan Quick who leads the National Hockey League with six shutouts.

The 25-year-old native of Milford, Connecticut is 6’1, 200-pounds and was the 73rd overall draft pick of the Kings in the 2005 NHL Draft.

Quick represented the United States in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
