In a surprise move, Washington Capitals head coach Dale Hunter quit his job less than a season behind the bench.

He told the Capitals team that he wanted to spend more time with his family in Canada.

Hunter, who replaced the popular Bruce Boudreau in November, is the owner of the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, a junior hockey team that is playing for the Memorial Cup. One of Hunter’s sons is the assistant coach and his brother, Mark took over as the head coach when Dale took the Capitals job.

***Washington Capitals head coach Dale Hunter, who took over on November 28, signed on for only the remainder of the season. If Hunter and the Capitals front office feel the fit is right, he can remain for 2012-2013.

If not, Hunter will return to running the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.

***Columbus Blue Jackets winger Cody Bass, who was called up from minor-league Springfield twice this season, will have shoulder surgery on January 3 thus ending his season. He is a tough player.
