The extension runs through the 2017 season and includes raises that will make his annual salary to $2.05 million. Jones will also get annual bonuses for staying as the head coach of up to $300,000 a year.

The University of Cincinnati Bearcats football team and their 10,000-plus fans made the eight-hour road trip to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl and came out victorious over the SEC’s Vanderbilt Commodores, 31-24.

Head coach Butch Jones, who had a 4-8 team last year said the seniors were the reason for the team’s resurgence to 10-3 and a Big East championship.

It marks only the fifth time that the Bearcats have won 10 games in a season, 1951, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

With UC’s 13th all-time bowl appearance, their record is 7-6 overall.

The Bearcats wore a new helmet for Saturday’s game. It featured a matte black finish. The usual C-Paw logo was on the left side of the helmet, with the players’ jersey numbers on the right side.

The helmets were made for the Liberty Bowl only. The football team gets to keep the helmets as part of their bowl gifts.

The rest of their uniform was the same.

LIBERTY BOWL preview: Cincinnati, Vanderbilt hookup today at 3:30 PM ET on ABC in Memphis

The Cincinnati Bearcats (9-3) takes on the Vanderbilt Commodores (6-6) in the December 31 Liberty Bowl.

This is the 53rd edition of the Memphis bowl.

The Bearcats have a load of talent led by their quarterbacks Zach Collaros, if he is recovered from an ankle injury, Munchie Legaux and Isaiah Pead, the all-Big East running back.

One of the reasons for the Bearcats turnaround-season was a much-improved defense which was steady enough despite a series of key injuries and an inexperienced secondary and an overhauled defensive line that came up with 35 sacks in a nine-game period. Cincy is among the nation’s leaders in turnover margin.

New Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin came and changed a losing culture into a winning atmosphere and did just that.

Vandy is playing in just its fifth game in its history.

The Commodores rallied back from back-to-back 2-10 records to 6-6.

Vanderbilt’s QB is Jordan Rodgers, brother of Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers.

Bearcats QB Collaros looking to play in today’s Liberty Bowl

When University of Cincinnati QB Zach Collaros fractured his ankle in the November 12 loss to West Virginia at Paul Brown Stadium, it looked he was finished for the year.

But during his rehab since that date, Collaros has been ahead of schedule by two weeks according to doctors.

There is a chance that Collaros could play in today’s (December 31) game in the Liberty Bowl against Vanderbilt.

Collaros passed for 1,860 yards and 14 touchdowns. While he was absent for three games, head coach Butch Jones used the two-QB system of Munchie Legaux and Jordan Luallen that was good enough to win a piece of the Big East championship.

The Bearcats (9-3, 5-2 Big East) are returning to the postseason after last year’s diasppointing 4-8 record.

Their opponent, the Vanderbilt Commodores finished at 6-6 overall, 2-6 in the SEC. They’re making just its fifth bowl game ever and have a 2-1-1 record in the postseason. This will be their first-ever appearance in the Liberty Bowl, which is located in Memphis, four hours from the school’s home in Nashville.

UC and Vandy have two common opponents in Connecticut and Tennessee. The Commodores beat UConn 24-21 and lost to the Volunteers in overtime, 27-21. The Bearcats beat UConn 35-27 and lost to the Vols 45-23.
