The Dayton Flyers defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 86-70 to capture the 2011 Old Spice Classic championship in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, which is in the Orlando area.

Five Flyers scored in double figures led by the Old Spice Most Valuable Player, Kevin Dillard. Dillard scored 19 points, 10 assists and career-highs with seven steals and three blocks.

Josh Parker put in 12 points and Luke Fabrizius scored 11 as the Flyers won their fourth in a row and improved to a 5-1 overall record.

The Old Spice Classic is Dayton’s 12th in-season tournament title. UD has won three of the last five it has participated in and is the first since taking the 2008 Chicago Invitational Challenge.

The Flyers improved to 14-5 against BCS programs over the previous five years and has won eight of the last nine.

In the program’s history, Dayton had never beaten a Big Ten team by double-figures prior to the game against Minnesota. It was their first win against a Big Ten team since winning at Illinois during a run to the 2010 NIT crown. This was their first regular-season win over a Big Ten school since knocking off Purdue in 2001-02 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Dayton led at the half 37-28, using a 25-5 run to the first 20 minutes.

The Flyers led by as many as 18 points in the second half.

Luke Donald is the number-1 golfer in the world and also the PGA Tour in 2011.

But now, he is also the year’s number-1 money winner after winning the Children’s Miracle Network Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Donald had to rally big-time to win the tournament. He ran off six straight birdies on the back nine to comeback from five shots off the lead, to finish at 8-under-par 64 and 17-under for the week.

Coming into the tourney, Donald was trailing Webb Simpson by $363,029 in the top money column.

Donald is also on pace to become the first golfer to win the money title on both the PGA and PGA European tours in the same season. His lead in Europe is more than $1.8 million over Rory McIlroy with five tournaments left in 2011.
