Jets beat Colts; head to New England for divisional playoff round

The New York Jets took control in the second half and rallied twice for a 17-16 win over Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC wild card game in Lucas Oil Stadium.

Nick Folk made a 32-yard field goal as time expired to give the Jets a trip to #1 seed New England in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs this Sunday.

The Jets moved the ball quickly driving 40 yards in five plays to get to the winning field goal. The drive was set up by an outstanding 47-yard kickoff return by Antonio Cromartie. Mark Sanchez completed passes of 9 yards to Braylon Edwards and 11 yards to Santonio Holmes to get the ball to the Colts’ 34-yard line. Two plays later, Sanchez hit Edwards again for 18 yards to the 14, and the Jets let the clock run down to three seconds before calling timeout and setting up the game-winner by Folk.

Colts QB Peyton Manning completed 18 of 26 passes for 225 yards and 1 TD.

Jets RB LaDainian Tomlinson rushed 16 times for 82 yards and scored on two 1-yard runs.

New England Patriots WR Randy Moss moves into 150 TD club

Wide receiver Randy Moss became the fourth player in National Football League history to reach 150 career touchdowns with sensational one-handed 34-yard catch on Sunday in a loss to the New York Jets in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

New England quarterback Tom Brady threw the ball to Moss, who reached up, grabbed the pass over his shoulder with his right hand, with Darrelle Revis behind him and had a touchdown without using his left hand. The scoring play came with 53 seconds left in the half.

Moss is the second wide receiver to have reached the 150 career touchdown mark. Moss has 149 touchdowns on pass receptions and one on a punt return. He trails Jerry Rice (208), Emmitt Smith (175) and LaDainian Tomlinson (153).

Steelers trade troubled Holmes who will get a 4-game suspension

compiled from staff, wire and internet reports

Santonio Holmes (nfl)

The New York Jets have been the busiest team during the NFL’s offseason making several bold moves to get them closer to that goal of a Super Bowl.

Their latest move is that of acquiring talented but troubled wide receiver Santonio Holmes from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night for a fifth-round pick in this month’s draft.

Earlier on Monday, the NFL has suspended Holmes for 4 games in the upcoming 2010 season due his conduct this offseason. The 26-year-old Holmes is facing a lawsuit in Florida from a woman who claims he threw a glass at her, cutting her above the eye, in an Orlando nightclub. The police have been investigating the woman’s claims. Holmes denies hurting the woman, and a witness has since taken responsibility for tossing the glass, according to Holmes’ attorney.

Not a stranger to trouble,  In 2008, Santonio was arrested for possession of marijuana, and he was involved in a domestic violence in 2006; the misdemeanor charges were dismissed. However, sources have said that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell warned him that repeated off-the-field issues would result in a suspension.

Holmes,  the 2009 Super Bowl MVP, gives second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez another big-time target to throw to in an offense that already has receivers Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, talented tight end Dustin Keller and recently signed free agent running back LaDainian Tomlinson.

The 5’11  Ohio State product was a first-round pick in 2006,  has 235 career catches for 3,835 yards and 20 touchdowns and adds a speedy complement to the jets’ passing game. He’s coming off the best season of his career statistically, after having 79 catches for 1,248 yards and five touchdowns. Holmes’ presence should allow Cotchery to assume more of a slot role, where he is extremely effective, and take double coverage off of Braylon Edwards.

After surprisingly making it to the AFC championship game last season, the Jets and general manager Mike Tannenbaum have been aggressive despite the league’s “Final Eight” restrictions that have limited who they could sign. The Jets have traded for Holmes and cornerback Antonio Cromartie, and signed Tomlinson, safety Brodney Pool and kicker Nick Folk.

New York Jets sign LaDainian Tomlinson

Tomlinson goes to the East Coast (wfe)

The New York Jets and the Big Apple have opened their welcoming arms to LaDainian Tomlinson.

The former Chargers star has signed a two-year contract worth about $5.2 million. The Jets signed the aging star to the NFL’s top-ranked offense of 172.2 yards per game to replace Thomas Jones, who was cut and later signed by Kansas City.

The Jets reached the AFC championship game last season, eliminating the Chargers and Tomlinson in the semi-finals.

The 2006 NFL MVP chose New York over Minnesota. The 31-year-old ranks eighth on the NFL’s career rushing list with 12, 490 yards.

Tomlinson chose the New York Jets for another reason. He is familiar with the Jets’ style of offense and coordiantor Brian Schottenheimer, who was the Chargers quarterbacks coach from 2002-2005.

The Jets have already begun to sell $80.00 green and white replica jerseys on their website.
