Commissioner Goodell says NFL playoffs won’t expand in 2013

Roger Goodell (NFL photo)

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Monday that the league will not be adding any teams to the playoffs for the 2013 season.

There had been talk and speculation that the NFL would expand past the current 12-team format.

The other topic at the owners meetings in Phoenix yesterday was that there is a scheduling conflict with the Baltimore Ravens opening at home due to the Baltimore Orioles game on the same date.

The Ravens play at M&T Bank Stadium and the Orioles at Camden Yards, just across the streek and the two stadiums share the same parking lots.

Traditionally, the NFL season opens with the Super Bowl winners playing host on the Thursday night after Labor Day.

The Ravens will not have that opportunity unless the Orioles move their night game on September 5 to the afternoon.

The NFL will not have the option of using September 4 because it is the first night of the Jewish holiday, Rosh Hashanah.

Goodell says he has twice talked to MLB commissioner Bud Selig to help get a resolution with the Orioles, but has not heard anything back.

The NFL has moved opening nights before. Last year, the opener was moved to Wednesday avoiding a conflict with President Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention.

In the last 10 races at Atlanta, the top winners includes Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch with two each. Jeff Gordon has won one race. In 15 races at the speedway, Gordon has finished in the top five, tops among active drivers.

Former president and racing fan Jimmy Carter, a Georgia native, worked at the track as a ticket vendor in the 1960′s. Driver Fireball Roberts won the first NASCAR event in Atlanta in 1960, the Dixie 200.

REVIEWING THE 2011 AdvoCare 500 Race: Rain extended the Labor Day weekend race into Tuesday. Hendricks Motorsports finished 1-2 with Gordon leading a race-high 146 laps which included the final 38 to hold off teammate Johnson for the win. With his 85th win, Gordon broke the tie with Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip for third on the career Cup win list. Gordon only trails Richard Petty (200) and David Pearson (105) in wins.

The race starts at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Tiger Woods commits to FedEx Cup playoff tournament

Tiger Woods officially entered The Barclays on Thursday. It starts on August 26 and is the first of four playoff events that conclude with the TOUR Championship and a $10 million prize to the winner of the yearlong FedEx Cup competition.

Currently, Woods is Number 108 in the standings, and he could fall down further in the standings depending on what happens this week at the Wyndham Championship. Only the top 125 players are eligible for The Barclays, which will be played at Ridgewood Country Club.

Woods did not play Ridgewood the time the tournament was held there in 2008. He missed the FedEx Cup playoffs that year while recovering from knee surgery. That is the only time he has not claim the $10 million prize since the series began in 2007.

After The Barclays, only the top 100 are eligible for the second round, the Deutsche Bank Championship outside Boston, which ends on Labor Day.
