Phoenix Suns coach Gentry has contract extended through 2013

Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry, who established using five players off his bench together for long periods of games and made then play scrappy defense, unheard of in the NBA, has been rewarded.

The Suns management has extended Gentry’s contract through the 2012-2013 season.

It is basically a one-year extension  as the Suns used the option several months ago on his previous deal which ran through the 2011-2012 season.

In his first full season as coach in 2009-2010, Gentry guided the Suns to a shocking third-best record in the tough Western Conference at 54-28. Phoenix advanced to the conference finals before losing to the eventual NBA champion LA Lakers.

Gentry was promoted to head coach when Terry Porter was fired during the All-Star break in the 2008-2009 season.

Under the 55-year-old’s guidance, Phoenix has a record of 72-41 and 46-12 at home.

Atlanta Hawks are set to promote assistant coach Larry Drew to replace Woodson

compiled from staff and wire reports

The Atlanta Hawks are set to hire Larry Drew as their next head coach.

Drew was picked after a search that also included former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey.  It had been rumored for several weeks that Casey would have the inside track because of his friendship and ties to Hawks general manager Rick Sund.

But the Hawks have decided to hire lead assistant Larry Drew who was Mike Woodson’s right hand man, until he was fired last month after six seasons in Atlanta.

Woodson had guided the team to an improved record each of the last five seasons, as well as three straight playoff appearances after a nearly decade-long postseason absence. But Atlanta was blown out in the second round by the Orlando Magic, who won four straight by an average of 25.3 points for the most lopsided sweep in NBA history.

After the series, the front office felt new leadership was needed on the bench after the Hawks’season ended for the second straight year in a row with a second-round sweep.

The 52-year-old Drew is a former point guard who played in the NBA for 10 years. He was an assistant with the LA Lakers, Detroit, Washington and New Jersey before he joined Woodson in Atlanta.
