Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal had a career-high eight runs on two home runs and reaching base six times in leading LA over the hapless Milwaukee Brewers 14-4 at Miller Park on Thursday.

The Cuban-born Grandal, a switch-hitter, knocked in two runs in the sixth inning. He belted a three-run homer in the eighth and another three-run blast in the ninth inning.

On December 18, 2014, he was traded to the Dodgers in the Matt Kemp trade with the San Diego Padres.

COLUMBUS, O. — The Los Angeles Kings on paper would appear to be one of the best teams in the National Hockey League.

At times they seem unbeatable. Other times they play inconsistent hockey, can’t string together two victories.

Just when people count them out as done for a season, the Kings emerge into the playoffs and a serious Stanley Cup contender. Proof, they have won two of the last three Cups.

Tuesday night, the Blue Jackets learned that the Kings came to play and would not be denied a win.

LA’s top line of Dwight King, Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli all scored goals en route to a 4-3 win before a crowd of 14,703 at Nationwide Arena. That line shot the puck a total of 10 times.

The Blue Jackets led briefly 1-0 on a goal by Jack Skille at 1:40 of the first period.

But the Kings had an answer everytime the Jackets got close on the scoreboard.

One bright spot in the game for Columbus was LW Scott Hartnell played in his 1,000th career NHL game. Only 27 current active players and 297 overall have ever achieved this honor in the game’s history. It was only fitting that Hartnell scored a goal in the contest.

Also scoring in the game were LA’s Dustin Brown and the CBJ’s David Savard.

Long Beach native, UCLA product John Merrick wins Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles

John Merrick

30-year-old John Merrick growing up in the Los Angeles area always wanted to play in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club.

He realized a dream last week.

On Sunday, the native of Long Beach, California made a couple of clutch shots that led to two pars in a sudden-death playoff and an eventual win in the Northern Trust Open when Charlie Beljan missed a 5-foot par putt on the second extra hole.

After a 169 starts on tour, the win could not have come at a better place for Merrick. He grew up in the LA suburb of Long Beach and went to college on the westside of town at UCLA.

Merrick closed the tournament at 2-under-par 69, to become only the ninth player to win this tournament at Riviera in Los Angeles, earning his first PGA Tour victory.

Merrick finished at 11-under-par 273.

LA Sparks looking to get back on winning track after two losing seasons in a row

The Los Angeles Sparks used to be one of the benchmark franchises in the WNBA when it came to winning games and championships.

The franchise has won two world titles and three Western Conference titles.

But in recent years, without superstar player Lisa Leslie, the team has been dogged in losing.

Last year LA was 15-19 and two years ago, they were 13-21.

General manager Penny Toler is determined to get the franchise back into the top of the league.

This team was very active in the offseason. The Sparks hired former Atlanta Dream assistant Carol Ross to be the new head coach. Toler acquired Nicky Anosike and former WNBA All-Star guard Alana Beard and they drafted Nneka Ogwumike.

They have other top-notch talent in former Ohio State star Jantel Lavender, DeLisha Milton-Jones, Ebony Hoffman and Candace Parker.

The Sparks did lose one of their older, reliable players in Tina Thompson, who is 37, the WBNA’s all-time scoring leader. She signed with Western Conference rival, the Seattle Storm.

They need Parker, the league’s 2008 MVP, to stay healthy.

Cleveland Indians starter Derek Lowe did a solid job on the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.

LA could not get a ball off the ground, meaning Lowe’s sinkerball was working.

Lowe allowed two runs, one earned and seven hits in six innings.

The Dodgers did beat the Indians, 5-4.
