Heading back to Stanford soon, Michelle Wie wins CN Canadian Open

Eventhough she is a member of the LPGA Tour, Michelle Wie has been looking forward to going back to college this fall. She’ll be heading back to Stanford University after the LPGA’s next event beginning September 10, the P&G NW Arkansas Championship.

In the meantime, on Sunday at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Wie closed with a 2-under-par 70 Sunday for a three-shot win at the Canadian Women’s Open, her second career win on the LPGA Tour.

Michelle Wie earns 2nd career win (LPGA)

Wie, who was 12 under for the tournament, earned a winner’s check of $337,500 in the $2.25-million event at St. Charles Country Club, the LPGA’S only tournament in Canada.

In the final round, Wie had five birdies, including the 13th, 14th and 15th holes.

Wie led wire-to-wire after an opening round of 65 and was tied with Jiyai Shin for the lead entering the final round at 10 under. She also had the second hole-in-one of her career in the opening round.

The 20-year-old Wie received a congratulatory spray of champagne from her longtime friend on the tour, Christina Kim.

Wie’s first career win came in November at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational during her rookie year.

Jiyai Shin of South Korea shot a 73 and tied for second with Kristy McPherson (66), defending champion Suzann Pettersen of Norway (69) and South Korean Jee Lee Young (69).

Ai Mayazato of Japan, the Number 1 ranked player heading into the Open shot a 69 and finished 15th, while Number 2 Cristie Kerr also shot a 69 on Sunday to finished eighth in the tournament.
