Brian Baum, who led the Fredericktown Freddies to a 10-0 regular season and to the state semifinals in his first season at the Knox County school, has been selected as co-coach of the year in Division V by the Associated Press.

Baum, before taking over the program at Fredericktown spent eight seasons at Mansfield Madison.

Coach Baum took the job after Luke Beal left to take the reins at Brunswick.

The Freddies football season was in good shape when Baum arrived, but he did retool the offense. They advanced the farthest they ever had in the playoffs.

Fredericktown has had two undefeated regular seasons in a row.

Fredericktown’s football team rarely was challenged in any game this season. The only exception was their opening game against Sparta Highland, a 17-14 win. After that, they had 11 consecutive games that were routs with them scoring 500 points.

Last weekend at Hamilton Township High School, the Freddies were in a game against Oak Hill but pulled it out in the end.

The Division V regional final went to the Freddies 28-21 as Matt Smith scored on a 59-yard touchdown run for the go-ahead score and Nathan Cubbage picked off his third interception with 2:11 remaining to seal the win.

The Freddies will play Coldwater in a state semifinal this Saturday.

Fredericktown, Ohio, located in Knox County, has one prominent resident and that being Luke Perry, he of Beverly Hills 90210 fame.

The Freddies now 13-0 received three touchdowns in the second half.

Oak Hill, who ends the season at 11-2, did tie the game at 21.
