NFL GAME RESULTS: Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns lose exhibition games

Carson Palmer and the rest of the Bengals offensive unit showed a few new wrinkles at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. It was not enough as the Buffalo Bills defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 35-20.

Cincinnati’s first team offense ran 19 plays and amassed 135 yards. Palmer was 9 of 11 for 95 yards, and had touchdown passes to Jermaine Gresham and Chad Ochocinco and finished with a quarterback rating of 142.2.

After Adam Jones took the opening kickoff 52 yards to the Bills 47-yard line, Palmer drove the Bengals to a touchdown in five plays. With the ball on the Buffalo 9, Bills linebacker Andra Davis couldn’t keep up with Bengals rookie tight end Jermaine Gresham who scored his first NFL touchdown. Gresham had four receptions for 45 yards.

After Buffalo tied the game up on a Roscoe Parrish 12-yard touchdown catch on a Trent Edwards pass, the Bengals drove down the field in nine plays. They scored when Chad Ochocinco shook off stumbling defender Leodis McKelvin and caught it in the back left corner of the end zone from 6 yards out.

The Bengals, now 2-2 on the preseason, wraps up that portion of the season Thursday at Indianapolis.

The Cleveland Browns have improved in some areas this preseason. But Saturday’s game against the Detroit Lions show that much work is still needed to even get to a .500 record in the upcoming season.

Saturday night at Ford Field, the Browns lost three fumbles and allowed three touchdown drives in the second half as the Detroit Lions came away with a 35-27 win.

Jake Delhomme Browns QB (NFL)

The Browns scored a touchdowns when Detroit running back Kevin Smith got stripped of the ball and Eric Wright returned it 44 yards for a touchdown.

Jack Delhomme operating out of the no-huddle offense with constant formation motion and shifting of players, thrived as he compiled a third straight 100-plus passer rating performance, completing 20 of 25 passes for 125 yards, with one touchdown to fullback Lawrence Vickers.

Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford had a nice game, connecting with Bryant Johnson on a fade over Sheldon Brown for a touchdown from 7 yards out on the Lion’s third play from scrimmage. Stafford never got sacked, while completing 13 of 17 passes for 141 yards and one touchdown.

In three exhibition games, Cleveland has not stopped any opposing quarterbacks, allowwing them to complete 30 of 36 passes.
