It has been years since the Centennial Stars have beaten Brookhaven.

The two Columbus City League North Division rivals usually finish second and third respectively to kingpin Northland.

Last year, Brookhaven lost twice only to Northland in the North; Centennial lost to Northland and Brookhaven.

Friday night on’s HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE broadcast, the Stars seemed determined to win the key early season matchup between the two schools.

There were several keys to the game that enabled the Stars to pull out the game:

*They did not allow the Bearcats to run and gun which they are accustomed to.

* The Stars committed 21 turnovers, but not many against the aggressive Brookhaven press.

* Centennial did not allow Randall Clarkson, Kevin Greenhow and Ronnie Williams to score at will.

* The Stars scored 18 points in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

The game came down to the waning moments as Brookhaven rebounded a missed shot by Centennial with a minute left. The Bearcats worked the ball down to the :10 second mark before attempting a shot which was missed. In his haste to get the loose rebound, Clarkson ran into the Stars Gyai Gyamerah with 2.3 seconds left and the foul was called. Gyamerah calmly went to the free throw line and canned both shots for the 62-60 home win.

The Stars (1-1, 1-0) were led by St. Charles transfer Christian Cumberlander with 13 points and Jamal Slappy with 11 points.

The only reason the Bearcats were in the game, was their free throw shooting (20-32) and the play of transfer Deiondray Martin who scored 20 points, all in the second, third and fourth quarters.

The Bearcats fall to 1-1, 0-1.

The Brookhaven Bearcats took to the road on Saturday night with an uncharacteristic 0-2 start to the new season. And were quickly behind 14-0 in the second quarter.

But behind the play of Kevin Greenhow, the Bearcats road trip to the Cincinnati area was a success.

Greenhow rushed for a 20-yard touchdown in overtime to give the Columbus City League North member a 20-17 win in a nonleague contest over Fairfield.

Greenhow was a big factor totaling 242 yards, 178 through the air and was responsible for all three touchdowns; passing to Casey Ren-Gayle for 5 yards and a 17 yard score to Ramone Broomfield in the fourth quarter which took the game into overtime.

COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Marion-Franklin holds off Brookhaven, 20-14

Friday night saw an epic battle between two of the Columbus City League’s premier football programs, Marion-Franklin from the South Division and Brookhaven from the North side of town.

The Red Devils controlled much of the game but the Bearcats mounted a comeback which fell short.
