Colts rally late for 17-13 win over Bengals in I-74 series

CINCINNATI, OHIO — The Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals are linked together by an hour and a half drive or 110 miles on Interstate 74.

Preseason scheduling has made this a nice rivalry over the years, as the two teams have met 19 of the past 20 years in regular season tuneup game.

Though the two teams are not division rivals, but they are conference rivals.

The Bengals had outplayed the Colts the entire game in all stat categories. But the Indianapolis third-string players outplayed the Bengals’ as quarterback Dan Orlovsky threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Taj Smith with 1:08 to go in the game and the Colts won their first preseason game in two years.

Smith had been tough to stop all game catching 8 passes for 140 yards. He was the go-to receiver with starters Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Pierre Garcon, Anthony Gonzalez and Austin Collie not playing.

With 38-year-old Kerry Collins at the helm, the Colts offense struggled.

The preseason game at Paul Brown Stadium only drew 39,797 fans which seats 65,000.

The Bengals had several bright spots. The defense played well for the second straight game; backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski was at one point in the game 10-for-10, finished at 14 of 17 for 90 yards and backup running back Cedric Peerman, rushed for 57 yards on 14 carries.
