COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE BASKETBALL: Africentric beats West despite 24 points by Holland

The City South Division leading Africentric Nubians knew they had to stop Ed Golden and Charles Holland when they played Columbus West on Friday night.

Holland was the only factor with 24 points as the Nubians won 87-60 to up its record to 10-1, 7-0 on the season.

The improved West Cowboys, who can score a bunch of points at times, fall to 3-7, 0-6.

Kenny Robinson led a balanced attack of eleven players with 11 points for Africentric.

The Africentric Nubians have picked up where they left off from last season by winning key games in the Columbus City League South Division.

This week, the Nubians beat Eastmoor Academy, 53-50 Tuesday night on Megasportsnews.com’s HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE.  Friday night, they breezed by the Independence 76ers, 83-63.

Host Africentric is now 3-1, 2-0 on the young season.

Independence drops to 1-1,1-1.

Kenny Robinson and Akil Cornish each scored 20 points. Cornish was 6 of 7 from beyond the three-point line. Trevon Saunders chipped in with 13 points and 10 assists for the Nubians.

The 76ers were led by Malik Breckenridge with 19 points.

The Ohio Division IV State semifinals from the Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State, as the Jackson Center Tigers (26-0) take on Columbus City League South Division member, Africentric Nubians.

Jackson Center, from Jackson Center, Ohio in Shelby County, plays in the Shelby County League where they were the champions. Other members include, the Anna Rockets, Botkins Trojans, Sidney Fairlawn Jets, Fort Loramie Redskins, Houston Wildcats and the Russia Raiders.

Hosie Smith, Africentric

To get to the Division IV Final Four, the Tigers, coached by athletic director Scott Elchert, beat Tri-Village in overtime in the district championship game, St. Henry in the regional semifinals and Dayton Jefferson in the regional finals.

They are led by senior Andy Hoying, the Southwest District Player of the Year. Their other starters include senior Tony Opperman, juniors Alex Meyer, Trey Elchert and Eric Ryder.

Off the bench, Jackson Center turns to freshman Gavin Wildermuth and junior Levi Winner.

Justin Miller, Africentric

The Tigers are very stingy on defense, giving up a shade over 40 points a game.

Jackson Center is making their third trip to Columbus and the Final Four, but their first since their championship year of 1985.

They are one of only two unbeaten schools left in the State of Ohio.

The Africentric Nubians are 22-3 and members of the Columbus City League South Division where they were runnerups to champion Walnut Ridge. Two of their losses were to the Scots and the other was to Division III powerhouse Bloom-Carroll.

The Nubians are making their third trip to the State’s Final Four and second straight. Last year, they lost to eventual Division III champion Cincinnati Taft.

In their tournament run, Africentric have outscored opponents 78.7 to 34.3 points per game in 6 wins over Columbus International, Gilead Christian, Northside Christian, Millersport, Newark Catholic and Beaver Eastern.

Trevon Saunders, Africentric

Beaver Eastern scored 43 points on the Nubians in the regional final and those are the most their given up in the tournament in one game.

The Nubians, who will play 10-15 players to wear the opponent down, are led by juniors Kenny Robinson, Trevon Saunders, Kejuan Skinner-Byrd, Cyquil Tucker and Newshawn Walls. Top seniors include Fuquan Tucker, Delquan Black, Hosie Smith, Justin Miller and freshman Jaquan Harrison.

The winner of the Jackson Center-Africentric game will play the winner of the Berlin Hiland (24-1)-Arlington (23-3) game on Saturday morning at 10:30.

In a game heard on HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE, Brookhaven continues to play well, as they beat Beechcroft, 94-73. Khalid King scored a career-high 31 points. The Buckeye Muffler & Brake Shop Player of the Game was Randall Clarkson with 15 points.

Beechcroft was led by their number-1 scorer Khaleed Franklin who had 26 points.

The Centennial Stars visited Whetstone on Tuesday night and took control in the first quarter at 22-8 and at halftime, 40-20 and rolled to a 74-60 win over the Braves.

Jeremy Browning led the way with a 19-point game, followed by Keenan Smith with 18.

Whetstone was led by Claude Bogan with 18 points.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gene Caslin’s Mifflin Punchers started out quick against the East Tigers with a 19-6 first quarter and a 35-12 halftime advantage en route to a comfortable 63-43 win.

Mifflin was led by J Murrell with 17.

East was led by Torre’ Smith with 21 points.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Michael Bates and the Africentric Nubians continued their fine season with a 91-66 win over the winless West Cowboys on the road.

The Nubians are 14-2 overall, 10-1 in the City South Divisiom.

The first quarter was tight as Africentric led just 27-21. They pushed ahead with breathing room at halftime with a lead of 49-33 and stayed in control the rest of the way.

The Nubians put three players in double figures: Fuquan Tucker led the way with 20, Kenny Robinson had 16 and Hosie Smith added 14.

West, who is having a horrible season at 0-17, 0-11, but has a young team, was led by Dasean Johnson with 13 points and Quantrell Huff scored 12.

 

 

 

The Independence 76ers are improving as the season moves along.

They won their fourth game on Tuesday, edging out visiting Briggs, 63-61 in a South Division game.

The game was tight through as Briggs led 19-14 at the end of the opening quarter; 38-30 at the half.

But the 76ers fought their way back into the game at the end of three quarters at 52-50 and in the fourth quarter, took control of the game with a 13-9 advantage.

The Bruins were led by Dewey Rice with 15 points and Charles Westbrook with 10.

The 76ers are 4-12, 4-8. Briggs is now at .500 at 8-8, 5-6.

 

 

 

 

Scott Williams’ Marion-Franklin Red Devils was just too much for the South Bulldogs, winning 72-39.

With home win, the Red Devils are 8-7, 7-4 in the South Division.

Marion-Franklin took control in the first quarter at 16-7 and 38-17 at the half and from there it was just a matter of what the final score would be.

Dresean Mathis led the winners with 17 points, Marquiez Lawrence scored 15 and Tony Anderson added 12.

South, who is coached former Walnut Ridge assistant Ramon Spears, drops to 5-10 overall, 1-10 in the South.

The Bulldogs received 11 points from Aaron Mullins and 9 from Oumar Diop.

Africentric got back to its winning ways Tuesday evening with Fuquan Tucker, Kenny Robinson and Hosie Smith leading the team to a 70-60 win over the Independence 76ers in City South action.

The host Nubians (9-2, 5-1) pulled away from the young 76ers by holding them to only nine points in the 3rd quarter.

Tucker led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds; Robinson added 14 points and Smith scored 10 and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Nubians.

The 76ers were led by Chris Johnson with 19 points and 6’8 Terry Hopewell with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The 76ers fall to 4-8, 3-5.
