Britain and Ireland regained the Walker Cup from the United States for the first time since 2003, knocking off the Americans in the afternoon singles for a 14-12 win in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Walker Cup, run by the USGA and R & A, is a biennial event contested in the odd years between the U.S., Great Britain and Ireland.

The event is in honor of George Herbert Walker, grandfather and namesake of former United States president George H.W. Bush.

The next three events have been scheduled. In 2013, the tournament will be in Southampton, New York; 2015 in Lytham St. Anne’s Lancaster, England and 2017 in Los Angeles, California.

The hosts needed 13.5 points to win the title and took an insurmountable lead after17-year-old Welshman Rhys Pugh won his singles match against U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft 2 1nd 1 and Steven Brown halved with Blayne Barber.
