Ohio State men beat weary Oakland, 92-63

The Ohio State basketball team was aware of Oakland University who beat Tennessee earlier in the year. They also knew that the Grizzlies were very fatigued having played four games in six days.

So they turned up the defensive pressure and withstood several comeback attempts to win 92-63 over the team from the Detroit suburb of Rochester.

Deshaun Thomas scored 17 points and Jared Sullinger in only 19 minutes of play, had 16 points and nine rebounds. Jon Diebler and David Lighty added 13 points apiece and William Buford scored 12.

The Buckeyes pushed their record to 12-0 while Oakland falls to 7-8.

Travis Bader led the Grizzlies with 15 points. His teammate, center Keith Benson, an NBA first-round projected draft choice by several basketball publications next year, was held to eight points, which is nine below his average. The Buckeyes challenged him everytime they could and were very successful as he only blocked one shot.

The 12-0 start by the Buckeyes is it’s best start since the 1990-91 team which won its first 17 games.

Oakland University is a mid-major Division I university located between Auburn Hills and Rochester, Michigan between Detroit. It has 18,553 students.

The Golden Grizzlies play teams like Tennessee, Dayton, Cincinnati, Butler and other big-time schools to make money to fund their basketball program. They figure that they’ll lose but sometimes they pull an upset.

The school, a member of the Summit League, pulled a nice upset against Tennessee.

Keith Benson had 26 points and 10 rebounds as Oakland beat the seventh-ranked Volunteers 89-82, three days after losing to Michigan State by a point. The Spartans were ranked in the top 10 as well.

The loss was only the second time that Tennessee, now 7-1, has lost on their home court to a non-conference team in Bruce Pearl’s six seasons.

The Volunteers led 76-68 with 7:18 to play in the game. But the physical play inside by the Vols drew several fouls down the stretch as the Golden Grizzlies used to their advantage to get back in the game. They had a 13-0 run of mostly from free throw shooting to take an 81-76 lead that it never lost.

Tennessee missed four free throws and several three-point attempts down the stretch.

Oakland is now 6-5 on the season.
