THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL: Nebraska beats Kansas State, 48-13; longtime rivalry ends

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez rushed for 242 yards and four touchdowns Thursday night as the seventh-ranked Cornhuskers ended the 99-year rivalry with Kansas State in the same way most of the football games have gone; a lopsided win for Nebraska, 48-13.

The game was the Big 12 opener for both teams in Manhattan, Kansas.

A redshirt freshman, Martinez who has rushed for 737 yards in his first five games for the 5-o Cornhuskers, also threw a 79-yard bomb for a touchdown to Kyler Reed, which put the visitors up 38-6 in the third quarter.

Martinez’s rushing total broke Jamaal Lord’s Nebraska record for a quarterback.

Daniel Thomas of the Wildcats (4-1), who came into the game averaging 157 yards a game rushing, was held to 63 yards on 14 carries.

The Big 12 may have 10 teams, but will move on without Colorado and Nebraska

compiled from staff and wire reports

Despite everybody’s belief and rumors, the Big 12 Conference will not be going into extinction.

The much-maligned and beleagued conference made a big-time comeback on Monday when Texas turned down an invitation to join the Pacific 10 and decided to stay in the Big 12.

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M quickly made the decision to the conference after commissioner Dan Beebe convinced his members that they would make more money in television and media deals in a 10-team Big 12 Conference than in a 16-team Pacific 10.

Rumor has it that Texas is clear and free to set up its own TV network and can keep all proceeds in exchange for remaining in the Big 12.

The news was extremely good for Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor, Iowa State and Missouri who would’ve been left without a conference if the Big 12 had dissolved completely.

Nebraska Cornhuskers join the Big Ten; 12 teams means title game coming

compiled from Big Ten and Nebraska Cornhuskers news

The Nebraska Cornhuskers will now have trips to places they ordinarily wouldn’t travel to: Chicago, Illinois (Northwestern), Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State), Greater Detroit (Michigan), East Lansing (Michigan State) and State College, Pennsylvania (Penn State).

That’s because, the Cornhuskers are saying “goodbye” to the Big 12 and “hello” to the Big 10 Conference.

The Big Ten’s board of presidents and chancellors unanimously welcomed Nebraska to the family on Friday afternoon. The move takes effect on July 1, 2011.

Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman said the Big ten offered the stability “that the Big 12 couldn’t.”

Nebraska is the Big ten’s first new member since 1900, when Penn State became the 11th member, and it comes just six month’s after the league announced that it was looking at expansion.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said he presumed there would be a Big Ten championship football game beginning in 2011. He said the conference will not be looking at anymore expansion at least for the next 12 to 18 months.

Most Nebraska fans are used to playing against the likes of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Iowa State and Kansas State for years. But now they’ll have to get to know the Big Ten schools.

With the move to the Big Ten, they’ll likely start a rivalry with their border neighbor, the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Conference shakeups already! Colorado to Pacific 10

compiled from staff, wire, University of Colorado and Pacific 10 Conference news

As expected Thursday, the first school that was going to leave the Big 12 was Colorado and they’ve chosen the Pac-10.

Colorado will become the 11th member of the Pacific 10 Conference.

The Buffaloes might not be the only team bolting from the Big 12. Nebraska could become a part of the Big 10 as soon as this weekend and there is speculation that Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State may also jump to the Pac-10 to possibly form a 16-team super conference.

If all the expected shakeup continues, the Big 12 might just be history. That would leave Missouri, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State out in the middle of the desert with nowhere to go. The Big 12 has been a highly successful conference that was formed in 1994 when the Big Eight invited the four Texas schools from the Southwest Conference.

The benefactor of all of this could be the Mountain West Conference, which could swoop up those ‘leftover’ schools and former a superconference of its own. There have been rumblings that Boise State is going to join the Mountain West.

Oregon selects Creighton’s Dana Altman

compiled from staff and wire reports

Multiple media outlets around the country are reporting that Creighton coach Dana Altman has agreed to take over at Oregon.

Fox Sports was the first to report that Altman had been hired to replace Ernie Kent, who was dismissed in March after 13 seasons at his alma mater.

Altman has spent 16 seasons at Creighton, which is located in Omaha, Nebraska. He has a record of 327-176. He led the Bluejays to 11 consecutive 20-win seasons before they went 18-16 this year.

Altman also went 68-54 in four seasons as Kansas State’s head coach from 1990-94.

The 51-year-old Altman was selected after the Eugene, Oregon school couldn’t lure Tubby Smith of Minnesota or Mike Anderson of Missouri to take the job.

The Oregon Ducks went 16-16 overall, 7-11 in the Pacific 10 Conference this past season.
