COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Wright State and Bluffton win against rivals

In the opener of a home-and-home mid-week series between Wright State University and the University of Cincinnati.

Wright State scored five runs in the final two innings to beat Cincinnati Tuesday evening at Marge Schott Stadium. The loss snapped UC’s four-game winning streak and dropped the Bearcats to 23-21 overall, while the Raiders improved to 24-17.

Cincinnati, who beat the Raiders in the first meeting earlier this year, 6-5 on April13, fell behind early as Wright State scored three runs in the first two innings, two coming in the second inning on a two-run homer by Gerald Ogrinc, to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

With Wright State starter Cody Kopilchack struggling to find the strike zone early in the second inning, junior Justin Riddell got the Bearcats on the board when he banged a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left-center field, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The home run was Riddell’s second of 2010.

The Raiders scored a run in the fifth to re-establish a three-run lead, 4-1. The Bearcats had a two-out surge in the bottom of the fifth helped the Bearcats claw back within one run at 4-3. with two outs, junior Chris Peters drew a five-pitch walk and then scored on a line-drive home run off the bat of sophomore T.J. Jones, his fourth homer of the season.

Two scoreless innings ensued before a pair of two-out, two-RBI singles from the Raiders opened up a five-run lead, 8-3, WSU tacked on an insurance run in the ninth inning that extended the lead to 9-3 and Wright State’s Greg Robinson retired the Bearcats in the eighth inning and ninth innings to close out the 9-3 Raider triumph.

Wright State’s Cody Kopilchack moved to 3-1 on the season after giving up five hits and three earned runs in 5.0 innings.

The Bearcats and Raiders conclude their mid-week home-and-home series on Wednesday May 5, at 6:30 p.m. on Wright State’s home field, Nischwitz Stadium.

Defiance and Bluffton hooked up for a wild game on Tuesday at Rutter Field in Defiance, Ohio. The two teams saw 11 pitchers combine to throw 378 pitches, while allowing 30 runs on 37 hits with 13 coming via extra bases during the 10-inning tilt. When everything settled down, Bluffton escaped with a 16-14 win.

At least one team scored in each of the first seven innings, with Bluffton doing damage in six different innings and Defiance denting the scoreboard in four different frames. The Beavers scored six runs in the third, while Defiance countered with a five-run outburst in the fourth and a four-run rally in the seventh.

Bluffton held leads of 1-0, 7-2, 10-5 and 14-10, only to see Defiance charge back each and every time. The Beavers finally broke through for good in the top of the tenth, when Stephen Torres laced a two-run single into center field to lift BU to the 16-14 win.

Zach Stallkamp went 3-6 with a home run, a double and four runs batted in, while Kirk Jesse also had three hits. Keith Wade went 2-6 with two runs and a pair of RBI and Alex Timofeev went 2-5 with two runs, two doubles and two runs batted in.
