ENTERTAINMENT FOR SUNDAY JULY 11, 2010: Almanacs, News and Celebrity Birthdays

compiled from staff, wire and Entertainment news

DAILY ALMANAC

Today is Sunday, July 11, the 192nd day of 2010. There are 173 days left in the year.

HIGHLIGHTS IN HISTORY

* On July 11, 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about childhood-innocence and racial injustice in a small Southern town during the Depression, was first published by J.B. Lippincott and Company.

* In 1859, Big Ben, the great bell inside the famous London clock tower, chimed for the first time. The clock itself had been keeping time since May 31.

* In 1952, the Republican National Convention, meeting in Chicago, nominated Dwight D. Eisenhower for president and Richard M. Nixon for vice president.

* In 1979, the abandoned United States space station Skylab made a spectacular return to Earth, burning up in the atmosphere and showering debris over the Indian Ocean and Australia.

* Ten years ago, on July 11, 2000, A Middle East summit hosted by President Bill Clinton opened at Camp David between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

CELEBRITY NEWS

* The Office star Jenna Fischer married writer Lee Kirk this past weekend in Malibu, California. The 36-year-old Fischer, was previously married to director James Gunn.

* BalletMet Columbus has been able to balance its budget. The company was able to clear out a tentative deficit of $50,000 in recent weeks through donations from supporters, according to Executive Director Cheri Mitchell. The company had reported a record $400,000 deficit at the end of the previous season, 2008-2009.

* Popular Cincinnati radio personality Gary Burbank who impersonates such characters as “Gilbert Gnarley,” “Earl Pitts, American!”, et.al will be needing your help to get into the National Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago. This is Burbank’s third nomination. Burbank, who retired from WLW-AM in 2007, faces very stiff competition as a local or regional pioneer from Chicago “Disco Demolition” DJ Steve Dahl; Nashville country music icon Ralph Emery: and Boston DJ Charles Laquidara.

Online voting is free and is open through August 1 at www.radiohof.org. Online registration is required.

* Staying with WLW-AM in Cincinnati, it was discovered by several of our website fans that the popular regional station has pulled longtime talk show host Mike McConnell off the air because word had leaked that he’s going to Chicago in August to work on WGN-AM.

WLW-AM recently refused to let McConnell return to the airwaves after he returned from vacation when word of his move to Chicago was discovered. His contract expires in July.

* NBC has pulled the new Love Bites from fall schedule and put The Apprentice on Thursday. The network made the move for several reasons: the pregnancy of series regular Becki Newton, who plays a young, single woman; and a request from creator Cindy Chupack to relinquish day-to-day management duties of the show.

The upcoming season of The Apprentice recently finished shooting in New York.

* Singer Carrie Underwood married Hockey star Mike Fisher on Saturday July 10 at the Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro.

* CNN host Larry King and his wife, Shawn Southwick-King, both submitted paperwork this past week to halt their divorce for which they filed in April. Word has it that the couple is trying to work things out.

* Actress Lindsay Lohan, who recently lost her probation case, has also lost her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley who abruptly resigned on Thursday.
