Georgia Tech came into its matchup with Air Force undermanned with some key players out due to various reasons.

Joshua Nesbitt, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s career leading rusher for a quarterback, missed the game because of a broken right arm.

Number-1 wide receiver Stephen Hill and starting safety Mario Edwards were among four players declared ineligible because of various academic problems. Also, Tech had three defensive players miss the first half because of a curfew violations.

The game came down to special teams play.

Air Force took advantage when the Yellow Jackets muffed a punt in the second half, scoring the go-ahead touchdown, a 3-yard run from Jared Tew in the 14-7 win in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The Falcons improve to 9-4, while Georgia Tech drops to 6-7.

* The Falcons  are the nation’s number-2 rushing attack using the option attack and averaging 317.9 yards a game.

* With their spread offensive attack, they lead the nation in rushing offense with 327 yards a game.

* Head coach Paul Johnson just wrapped up his third season at Georgia Tech. He spent six years as the head coach at Navy, winning his last five games against the Falcons to put a vise-grip on the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy.

*Tech’s defense gives up 169.7 yards a game, 78th in the nation.

* Georgia Tech came into the game with a loss to arch-rival Georgia in a disappointing season.

Virginia Tech beats Georgia Tech in key ACC battle, 28-21

The Virginia Tech Hokies had a key game Thursday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division. Not only was it a key game, but a challenging since some of their other games were less than tight.

Tailback David Wilson returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown with 2:23 to play, rallying the number 20 Hokies from a sloppy,  lethargic effort to a 28-21 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Virginia Tech is now 7-2 overall, 5-0 in the ACC Coastal Division. Remember, this is a team which was 0-2 to start the season after losing to Boise State and James Madison of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Georgia Tech lost quarterback Joshua Nesbitt to an injury before the end of the second quarter.

Virginia Tech still has key games left with North Carolina and Miami in the next two weeks before closing their regular season at home against arch-rival Virginia. If they can win those games, they’ll be playing in the ACC title game.

Georgia Tech falls to 5-4, 3-3 in the ACC Coastal Division.
