The Cleveland Browns have lost a fan favorite.

Free-agent kick returner/wide receiver Josh Cribbs has signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Raiders.

Cribbs, who will turn 30 in June, had been a member of the Browns since being an undrafted free agent out of nearby Kent State University in 2005.

His eight kickoff returns for touchdowns are tied for the most in NFL history with Leon Washington.

The 6’1, 215-pound Cribbs is a 3-time Pro Bowler and 2-time All-Pro. He was the 2009 NFL Special Teams Player of the Year.

His career totals stack up this way:

107 receptions, 1,161 receiving yards, 12,169 return yards and 20 total touchdowns.

BROWNS NOTES: Lose in overtime to New York Jets, 26-20

The Cleveland Browns game with the New York Jets was very exciting but it was heading for 20-20 tie as overtime would down. It would’ve been the first tie in the NFL since 2008, when the Philadelphia Eagles tied the Cincinnati Bengals in Cincinnati at 13-13.

But QB Mark Sanchez and the Jets had other plans.

Sanchez three a 37-yard pass to Santonio Holmes for the game winning touchdown with 16 seconds remaining Sunday, giving New York their second straight overtime win, 26-20. It was the AFC East leaders eighth regular-season road win in a row.

The 7-2 Jets survived three missed field goals by placekicker Nick Folk to overcome the improving Browns who fall to 3-6.

* Josh Cribbs suffered a right foot injury and did not return for Cleveland.

* Browns Linebacker Scott Fujita suffered a left knee injury and sat out the second half.

* Browns cornerback Sheldon Brown injured his left shoulder and did not return.

Browns drop to 0-2 as Chiefs rally to win game, 16-14

The game-by-game watch has started again for Cleveland coach Eric Mangini. The Browns let another winnable game get away.

The Browns dropped to 0-2 for the third straight season and fourth time in five years Sunday, losing to a much-improved Kansas City Chiefs team, 16-14.  That’s the same team that the Browns beat  last December 41-34.

Eric Mangini Browns coach (NFL)

The upcoming weeks will tell if Mangini will be able to survive under the Mike Holmgren regime. The Browns will be facing Baltimore, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and New Orleans.

Brandon Flowers returned an interception for a touchdown, Ryan Succop kicked three field goals and Thomas Jones ran for a late first down on a fourth-down gamble by coach Todd Haley as the Chiefs improved their record to 2-0 for the first time since 2005.

Highlights for the Browns were Josh Cribbs’ 65-yard touchdown reception from QB Seneca Wallace.

Wallace started in place of Jake Delhomme, who injured his right ankle at Tampa Bay last weekend. Wallace was 16 of 31 passing for 229 yards, but he had the pass interception that was run back by Brandon Flowers for a touchdown.

Finally, Browns honor Josh Cribbs with a new contract

Josh Cribbs is a dangerous kick returner (wfe)

Cleveland Browns kick returner/wide receiver Josh Cribbs was so elated with his new contract on Friday, that he celebrated it with the people who are his favorites, the fans.

After participating in a news conference at the Browns facility to announce his restructured three-year-deal, the former Kent State star, went to the I-X Center where the 2010 Cleveland Auto Show was being held and announced to a crowd of 2,000 to 3,000 fans that he just received a new deal and would be staying in Cleveland. It has been reported that Cribbs stayed at the Auto Show to sign an estimated 1,500 autographs.

“The fans are the main reason and a huge part of why I re-signed”, Cribbs said.

The contract runs through 2012 and is worth about $20 million, with $7 million to $7.5 million guaranteed, meaning he would be the highest-paid special teams performer in the NFL if he is able to achieve all of his incentives. The minimum value of the deal is the guaranteed money.
