Lopez is the latest player designated for assignment by slumping Indians

The Cleveland Indians, in the midst of a 10-game losing streak, have given Derek Lowe and Johnny Damon some company on the”designated for assignment” list. Today, the team announced that they designated infielder Jose Lopez for assignment. The move allows room for right-hander Frank Herrmann who has been recalled from Triple-A Columbus. Herrmann is needed due to an over-used bullpen.

Lopez appeared in 66 games for the Indians this year, playing third base and seeing some time at first and second. The 28-year-old posted a .249 batting average in 224 plate appearances. He earns $800K this year after signing a minor league deal with Cleveland last December.

The Cleveland Indians used Wednesday to shore up their Opening Day roster before hosting the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday afternoon.

The Tribe have placed injured center fielder Grady Sizemore on the 60-day disabled list. Also going to the DL for s shorter stay is left-hander David Huff, who has a strained right hamstring.

The Indians designated outfielder Thomas Neal for assignment.

Cleveland purchased the contracts of infielder Jose Lopez and reliever Dan Wheeler from Triple-A Columbus.
