COLUMBUS, OHIO — The Chicago Blackhawks came into Thursday night’s game with the Blue Jackets on a three-game skid.

It’s hard to believe that this team was having problems, because they’re the best team in the Central Division.

They got well real quick, because they were playing the Central’s worst team, Columbus.

Jackets-killer Jonathan Toews scored two goals and added an assist, and Chicago’s horrible power-play scored twice as well in a 6-3 win over the struggling Jackets.

The Blackhawks dominated play so much during the game, that it had a 27-9 shot lead after 29 minutes of play.

Chicago, had lost to St. Louis 3-0 on Tuesday, entered the game last in the NHL in power-play production, scoring only 5 goals in 57 opportunities. They went on to go 2-for-3 against the Blue Jackets penalty kill which is one of the worst in the NHL.

The Blackhawks also received goals from Andrew Brunette, Steve Montador, Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa. Brent Seabrook and Nick Leddy chipped in with two assists apiece.

An announced crowd of 15,048, saw a few bright spots in the loss for Columbus. Grant Clitsome lit the lamp twice, a career-high; recently acquired Mark Letestu scored a goal and star player Rick Nash earned his 500th career NHL point. Fedor Tyutin garnered two assists.

The Jackets continue to frustrate themselves and their fans with the worst record in the NHL at 2-12-1 and 5 points.

Lord Stanley revisits Chicago after 49-year hiatus

compiled from staff and wire reports

Patrick Kane saw the puck get past the goalie for the winning score, but his teammates and coaches didn’t realize it for a few seconds.

Kane’s magical moment ended 49 years of frustration for the Chicago Blackhawks without a title.

Kane will forever be a Chicago hero, although he probably already was before. He sneaked the puck past Michael Leighton 4:06 into overtime and stunned Philadelphia to lift Chicago to a 4-3 overtime win in Game 6 on Wednesday night for their first championship since 1961.

Chicago had won its first Stanley Cup since Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita led the way 49 years ago.

Jonathan Toews was first to touch the Stanley Cup, accepting it from commissioner Gary Bettman and hoisting it above his head in victory. Marian Hossa, whose last two attempts at a title were denied the last two years with Detroit and Pittsburgh, was next to hold the coveted trophy.

The Philadelphia Flyers have lost their last six Stanley Cup appearances who are still looking for their first Stanley Cup since winning consecutive championships in 1974 and 1975 during the “Broad Street Bullies” period and Bobby Clarke’s era.

Blackhawks on the brink of a Stanley Cup; defeat Flyers 7-4

compiled from staff and wire reports

The Chicago Blackhawks had everything going their way on Sunday night,  balance scoring, home ice advantage and mixing up the scoring lines which put them one win away from a Stanley Cup.

Dustin Byfuglien and Patrick Kane both were moved out of the number 1 scoring line, but they had two goals and two assists to lead Chicago to a 7-4 win over Philadelphia, allowing them to take a 3-2 series lead.

Byfuglien, who at 257-pounds looks like a defenseman intead of a winger, had eight goals in the first three rounds of the plyoffs but none in the first four games against the  tough Flyers defense, scored a power-play goal in the second period and added an empty net goal in the closing seconds of the third period.

The scoring line of Jonathan Toews, Byfuglien and Kane that was effective earlier in the playoffs, was split up, and the strategy worked to perfection. They had a combined 1 goal and four assists in the first four games against the Flyers.

Brent Seabrook added a power-play goal, Dave Bolland, Kris Versteeg and Patrick Sharp also scored for the Blackhawks.

Chicago can capture their first Stanley Cup since 1961 with a win in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

“Big Buff” Dustin Byfuglien leads Blackhawks to victory

The Chicago Blackhawks are within one win of the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 18 years.

Dave Bolland’s pass from behind the net found Byfuglien in stride as he skated fast and hard into the slot Friday night. That goal had a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks and a 3-0 series lead in the Western Conference finals.

Two assists from Jonathan Toews, and 44 saves from Antti Niemi put the Blackhawks on the brink of their first appearance in the finals since 1992. They will have the chance to wrap up the series sweep at home on Sunday.

Toews’ two assists gave him a point in 12 straight playoff games, breaking a club record he had shared with Hall of Famer Stan Mikita, who had an 11-game streak in 1962. Toews has 25 points in the 2010 playoffs.
