Cueto rehab assignment, bullpen session goes well; faces NY Mets on Monday

This past Tuesday and Friday were good days for Cincinnati Reds ace starter Johnny Cueto in his bid to return to the team.

On Tuesday in a rehab start at Single-A Dayton, Cueto threw 58 pitches over five scoreless innings. He had no issues with his lat or the oblique muscle that became sore while he was on the disabled list.

Cueto pitched in the bullpen Friday for his regular side session, where he threw a total of 35 pitches.

Cueto is ready to return to the rotation from the disabled list Monday. Cueto, who has been out since April 15 with a strained right lat muscle, has been named as the starter for the series opener against at the New York Mets.

There is no doubt that the Reds will be watching Cueto very closely with a pitch count limit.

Cueto’s rehab start goes well; pitches again on Tuesday with Dayton

Cincinnati Reds ace starting pitcher  Johnny Cueto reported no setbacks on Friday, the day after he threw 50 pitches in three innings during a rehab start for Class A Dayton on Thursday.

The Reds placed Cueto on the 15-day disabled list on April 15 with a strained right lat. He was set to begin a rehab assignment last week but felt soreness in his right oblique. He rested for a few more days before he resumed throwing.

The Cincinnati Reds thought they had ace pitcher Johnny Cueto on the right track to pitch two rehab assignments in the next five days.

But their day off in Chicago had some bad news that Cueto had a setback during his checkup in Cincinnati. His rehab assignment start today at Double-A Pensacola has been cancelled.

Cueto, who is on the DL for a strained right lat, felt soreness in his oblique muscle.

Cueto will be examined again on Monday and any rehab pitching assignments will be announced at a later date.

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto threw 45 pitches in a bullpen session, his second session off the mound since going on the DL on April 15 due to a strained muscle in his back.

Cueto’s place in the rotation has been taken over by rookie lefty Tony Cingrani, who has been brilliant and is 2-0.

Cueto will heading out to a rehab assignment soon.

Reds decide to keep Chapman’s 100-plus mph fastball in the closer’s role; starting rotation is set

The Cincinnati Reds have decided to keep their fireballer closer Aroldis Chapman in that role for the 2013 season.

There had been speculation with Chapman starting this spring, that he was going to be moved into the rotation.

Chapman has said all along that he would prefer to close games.

The Reds have a solid rotation in Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, Homer Bailey and Mike Leake. That quintet started every game but one during the 2012 season, the best in Major League Baseball.

Cueto will start the Opening Day Game on April 1 against the Los Angeles Angels at Great American Ball Park.
