Long Beach native, UCLA product John Merrick wins Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles

John Merrick

30-year-old John Merrick growing up in the Los Angeles area always wanted to play in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club.

He realized a dream last week.

On Sunday, the native of Long Beach, California made a couple of clutch shots that led to two pars in a sudden-death playoff and an eventual win in the Northern Trust Open when Charlie Beljan missed a 5-foot par putt on the second extra hole.

After a 169 starts on tour, the win could not have come at a better place for Merrick. He grew up in the LA suburb of Long Beach and went to college on the westside of town at UCLA.

Merrick closed the tournament at 2-under-par 69, to become only the ninth player to win this tournament at Riviera in Los Angeles, earning his first PGA Tour victory.

Merrick finished at 11-under-par 273.

There was a six-week period this year, when PGA Tour golfer Dustin Johnson could not swing a golf club, more less win a tournament.

He returned to the Tour after the six-week hiatus, and competed well in the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, where he tied for 19th place.

The injury occured in early March at his home while lifting a jet ski. The result was a pulled muscle in his lower right back.

Johnson seems to be back on his game as he won the St. Jude Classic on Sunday in Memphis, Tennessee, in his second event. He carded a 4-under-par 66 to hold off John Merrick by one stroke.

Merrick remains winless in 154 PGA Tour starts. He shot a 69 on Sunday.

Davis Love III shot a 69 and tied for third with Nick O’Hern (69), Chad Campbell (68) and Ryan Palmer (66) at 273.

Rory McIlroy shot a 69 and tied with three others at 274.

McIlroy finally having fun on golf course; takes lead at St. Jude Classic

Lately on the golf course, PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy has not been having fun.

He played only two rounds each at The Players Championship, the BMW PGA Championship in England and the Memorial last week, he said he was looking for improvement and consistency in his game.

Well, it seems like he is back in the groove, as McIlroy snapped his string of three straight missed cuts on Friday by shooting a 5-under-par 65 to take the lead at the St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee.

McIlroy birdied three of the final four holes, and had an eagle, five birdies and two bogeys to match his lowest PGA Tour round this year. He broke out of a four-way tie after a birdie on #18 to reach 7-under-par 133.

Jeff Maggert, who was tied after the first-round with John Merrick, shot a 68 to match J.B. Holmes at 64 and Kevin Stadler at 65 for a 6-under total.
