The University of Akron has planned a news conference this morning (February 2) at which they will more than likely hire former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel in a nonathletic administrator’s role.

Akron spokeswoman Eileen Korey says that the 59-year-old Tressel was a key figure in helping to select new Zips’ head coach Terry Bowden.

Discussions with Tressel continued after Bowden’s hiring. Tressel said last week that he wanted to get back into a college administration role if he could.

Former OSU coach Tressel may be on way to U of Akron

Just days after selling his Upper Arlington home to Columbus, Ohio car dealer, Bobby Layman, it appears that former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel might be heading to the University of Akron.

Media reports out of Akron have stated that Tressel might be hired in an administrative position.

Even school spokeswomen Eileen Korey said in a released statement that Tressel and the school have had discussions since December. He even helped Akron in their search for a new football coach which ultimately went to Terry Bowden.

The 59-year-old Tressel started his coaching career at Akron from 1975-1978 as a graduate assistant.

After resigning under pressure last May due to NCAA rules violations at Ohio State, Tressel spent the 2011 season in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts.

Former OSU coach Tressel might take over Colts job

There is a chance that all Ohio State Buckeyes fans might see former head football coach Jim Tressel leading the Indianapolis Colts in 2012.

Reports out of Indianapolis and around the NFL say that Tressel, has already interviewed for the job with owner Jim Irsay. The Baldwin-Wallace grad spent the 2011 season as a game day consultant for the Colts.

Tressel is a top-notch coach, eventhough his only experience is in the college ranks.

His only baggage is that he was ousted due to NCAA rules violations and allowing otherwise ineligible players play when knowing of their misdeeds.

There are other candidates for the Indianapolis job: Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Morhinweg and former Vikings head coach Brad Childress.

Meyer laying down new laws; get into trouble and you’re out!

Dominic Clarke

DerJuan Gambrell

New  Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer is making it clear that he will not be tolerating the off-the-field problems that ended up ousting former coach Jim Tressel.

Ohio State football communications spokeman Jerry Emig told members of the media on Sunday during the Indiana-OSU basketball game, that defensive backs Dominic Clarke and DerJuan Gambrell have been released from their scholarships.

Gambrell, a freshman from Toledo, was dismissed due to “violation of team rules” which OSU would not give details about.

Clarke, a redshirt sophomore from Frederick, Maryland, had been charged with drunken driving and was also arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct after allegedly discharging a BB gun on campus. Fortunately, no one was hurt in that incident.

Much-maligned Bollman headed to Boston College

Jim Bollman (courtesy of OSU athletics)

Former offensive coordinator Jim Bollman, who took the brunt of criticism during the 2011 season at Ohio State for not being a great play-caller, has landed another job with the Boston College Eagles.

Bollman’s new position will be as the offensive line coach and running-game coordinator.

Everybody who covered and followed the Buckeyes team, knew that Bollman was an offensive coordinator by name only as former head coach Jim Tressel called all the plays.

But when Tressel resigned in May due to NCAA violations, Bollman had to take over an offense that had inexperienced quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers and was missing Daniel Herron at tailback and Devier Posey at wideout and it was obvious Bollman had no clue at what to do as the offense struggled against Miami (FL), Michigan State, Purdue and Penn State en route to a 6-7 record, the first losing season at Ohio State in 23 years.

Bollman told the media that he interviewed for the job a few weeks ago with Eagles head coach Frank Spaziani. He has never worked with Spaziani but they’ve known each other for years.

Boston College is coming off a bad season of their own in 2011 at 4-8 overall, 3-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
