Pacers reward Vogel for team’s late season surge

The Indiana Pacers have taken the interim tag off of Frank Vogel and have made him the permanent head coach.

Larry Bird, the former Celtics star and current Pacers president of basketball operations, was very pleased with the way Vogel led the team after the firing of Jim O’Brien and had him as the #1 choice all along.

Vogel led the Pacers to a strong finish and into the playoffs last season.

Matta introduces new video coordinator Paulus; non-conference schedule set

Thad Matta talks to media (file photo)

Ohio State head men’s basketball coach Thad Matta called a late spring news conference to introduce recently hired video coordinator Greg Paulus and to discuss next season’s non-conference schedule.

Unlike the football program, the basketball team has no NCAA violations or bad press hovering over them. Matta has cleaned up the program he inherited from Jim O’Brien in July of 2004.

Since that point in time, Matta has led the Buckeyes to at least a share of four Big Ten championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances, including a spot in the 2007 national championship game.

As for Paulus, an assistant coach at Navy last season before the head coach resigned leaving him in limbo, he passed up other jobs for a chance to work for Matta and Ohio State.

Matta and the 24-year-old Paulus have a relationship that dates back to when Thad was at Xavier and recruited the much-sought after basketball player who eventually signed with Duke.

The non-conference schedule is set for the 2011-2012 season with one left to be announced later:

November 11 Wright State

November 15 Florida

November 18 Jackson State

November 21 North Florida

November 23 Virginia Military Institute

November 29 Duke

December 3 Texas-Pan American

December 10 at Kansas

December 14 South Carolina Upstate

December 17 at South Carolina

December 20 Lamar

December 22 Miami University at Nationwide Arena

Emerson College gives former OSU coach O’Brien a chance

Former Ohio State head basketball coach Jim O’Brien has been on the sidelines since 2004, when he was fired for giving money to a recruit.

But all of that is in the past as Emerson College of Boston, Massachusetts, has hired him to be their head basketball coach.

Emerson is an NCAA Division III private school, founded in 1880 by Charles Wesley Emerson. O’Brien has been living in Boston since leaving Columbus.

The 61-year-old O’Brien had a 133-88 record in seven seasons at OSU before running into NCAA problems which caused the Buckeyes to vacate 113 of the games following the investigation.

Archie Miller named new men’s basketball coach at Dayton

The University of Dayton has selected one of the top young assistant coaches in college basketball today to its new basketball coach, naming Ryan “Archie” Miller.

The 32-year-old Miller comes to Dayton from the University of Arizona where as Associate Head Coach he helped the Wildcats to a 30-8 season that ended with an Elite Eight berth. Miller succeeds Brian Gregory, who was named head coach at Georgia Tech last week.

Miller has a recent connection to two teams that just missed the Final Four this season. Prior to the last two years at Arizona, he was at Ohio State for two seasons.

Miller is the 19th coach in Dayton history, and just the sixth Flyer coach in the last 64 years. The others include Tom Blackburn, Don Donoher, Jim O’Brien, Oliver Purnell and Brian Gregory.

Miller will be taking over a UD team which enjoyed its fourth straight 20-win season in 2010-11. Dayton will return three starters-Chris Johnson, Paul Williams and Josh Benson-from the team that was 22-14 and played in the NIT after reaching the championship game of the Atlantic 10 tournament.

Jim O’Brien fired as Pacers coach

The Indiana Pacers fired Jim O’Brien after the team failed to maintain a tremendous start to the season by losing seven of its last eight games.

Team president Larry Bird said that he was upset that O’Brien refused to give more playing time to the Pacers younger players. The former Celtics legend said that rookie Paul George deserved to play and that Tyler Hansbrough should’ve been playing more earlier in the season.

In 3 1/2 seasons, Indiana went 121-169 under O’Brien and were 17-27 this season.

Assistant Frank Vogel will be the interim the rest of the season.
