Steve Kerr and Phoenix Suns will go separate ways after draft

compiled from staff and wire reports

Less than four weeks after the Phoenix Suns’ unexpected run to the Western conference finals, general manager Steve Kerr will be leaving the franchise after owner Robert Sarver asked him to take a 10 percent cut in pay.

The stunning departure by Kerr could put the franchise in turmoil which could cost them their best player Amare Stoudemire. Although, Stoudemire’s agent Happy Walters has been in contact with the Suns and is waiting for a contract proposal.

Kerr’s contract will be ending after the upcoming NBA draft. Both Kerr and head coach Alvin Gentry seemed to be headed towards pay raises after the team’s continued improvement all season and the surprising run to the conference finals. The Suns won 54 games and finally beat the San Antonio Spurs, their longtime arch-rivals, in the second round before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games in the Western Conference finals.

Kerr made several moves which improved the club dramatically. Obtaining Jason Richardson, Jared Dudley through trades and drafting Robin Lopez and Goran Dragic in the 2008 NBA Draft.
