Cavs dominate Pacers, 90-76; fighting Knicks & Hawks for 8th spot in Eastern Conference playoffs

There was a time when everybody said the Cleveland Cavaliers could not win without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving.

That statement has been proven wrong as peaking Cavs have won four of the past five games without Irving.

In the meantime, other players are stepping up. Dion Waiters, Luol Deng, Jarrett Jack, Tristan Thompson and Spencer Hawes have chipped in to lead the young team.

On Sunday afternoon, Cleveland dominated the East’s best team, the Indiana Pacers, 90-76.

Walters scored 19 points, Deng knocked down 15 and Thompson controlled the boards with 16 rebounds to help in chasing down the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Cavs, who are 14-12 since February 5, might be getting Irving back into action this week as they play at Orlando on Wednesday, at  Atlanta on Friday and host Charlotte on Saturday. The Hawks are injured and sputtering having lost six in a row.

Cleveland ended a nine-game losing streak to the Pacers.

No Shaq, No Bosh, Cavs and Raptors play an old ABA-style game

Friday night’s game in Toronto between the Cavaliers and the Raptors was missing two All-Star centers, Shaquille O’Neal (sprained right thumb) and Chris Bosh (left ankle). You probably thought both teams would have trouble scoring?

Not exactly! Both teams ran up and down the floor like it was a game from the old ABA days with the red, white and blue ball to the tune of a 126-118 score. Plus, the game went into overtime.

The lowlight for the Cavaliers was the fact that they gave up 50 points in the paint. But the saving grace was their free throw shooting, 31 of 36 and the two stars of the game, LeBron James and newly-acquired forward, Antwan Jamison. James scored 36 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 9 assists. Jamison, playing out of position at center in overtime, scored 22 with 11 rebounds.

Speaking of overtime, Cleveland outscored Toronto, 15-7  much to the dismay of the raucus crowd at the Air Canada Centre. Mo Williams made back-to-back 3-pointers in overtime and finished with 22 points. Delonte West contributed 15 points for the Cavs, which won its third straight.

Toronto, who is always tough on the Cavs, were led by Jarrett Jack and Andrea Bargnani each scored 24 points, while Hedo Turkoglu had 18 before fouling out in overtime. Cleveland has won 15 of their past 18 meetings with the Raptors.

Cleveland led 105-98 with 3:39 to go, but Bargnani hit a jumper, Turkoglu made a layup and Antione Wright made a pair of free throws to cut it to 105-104, with 2:12 remaining. LeBron James ended the run with two free throws but Turkoglu tied it at 107 with a 3-pointer from the wing, then gave the Raptors a 109-107 lead with a rebound-dunk on Jarrett Jack’s missed layup with 50.6 seconds remaining.

James made a layup to tie it and Jack made two free throws but LeBron answered with yet another driving layup, making it 111-111 with 13 seconds left.

Both teams missed 3-point shots inside the last 2 seconds of the game to send it into overtime.

After playing all game with no defense, The Cavs suddenly found it in overtime and it helped key the run to close out the game. Mo Williams made 3-pointers on Cleveland’s first two possessions in overtime and Toronto never challenged again, as they shot 1 of 8 in the extra session.
