DAYTON FLYERS Basketball Update: beats Grand Valley State & Findlay in exhibitions

DAYTON FLYERS 77   GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS 66   11/1/2010

Point guards Josh Parker and Juwan Staten led the Flyers with 14 and 12 points, respectively, as the University of Dayton men’s basketball team opened the season with a 77-66 win over Grand Valley State at UD Arena.

The two newcomers shared time at point guard as Parker came off the bench.

In just 19 minutes of action, preseason first team all-Atlantic 10 Conference selection Chris Wright scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor. Junior Chris Johnson rounded out the group of four Flyers scoring double-figures with 11 points, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

Lakers’ guard James Thomas scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half as the Sporting News Preseason Division II third-ranked team shot 52 percent from the field.

DAYTON FLYERS 85  FINDLAY OILERS 68    11/6/2010

The Dayton Flyers closed out the exhibition season with 85-68 win over Findlay at The University of Dayton Arena.

Redshirt junior Josh Parker led all Dayton scorers with 15 points, and also dished out a game-high four assists, with no turnovers in 20 minutes of action. His assist on freshman Brandon Spearman’s layup at 14:10 gave UD the lead for good.

Parker was 3-of-5 from behind the three-point line, including back-to-back treys to help the Flyers pull away from the Oilers, 49-44, at the 13:33 mark. Parker also tied for the game-high in rebounds with seven.

Eleven different Flyers scored, including four who reached double figures. In addition to Parker, junior Chris Johnson and Paul Williams, as well as freshman Juwan Staten each scored 12 points. Johnson also tied for the game-high in rebounds with seven.

Findlay senior Nathan Hyde led all scorers with 21 points on 6-of-13 from the floor, including 4-of-9 from the three-point arc.
