Just a matter of time before Berry leaves OSU football team

Jamaal Berry’s name is still listed on the Ohio State football team roster.

But his high school coach says that Berry told him that the new coaching staff have not given him any indication that he’ll be playing in the future.

Berry and his attorney R. William Meeks were in court this week as the OSU running back faces charges of assault and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors, for an incident on October 21 near the North Market.

Justin M. Jerich, a 21-year-old Westerville man reported that Berry hit him and taunted him near a parking garage.

Berry and Meeks contend that the Florida native is not guilty and the case may not go to trial.

According to an Ohio State football spokesperson, Berry is still on scholarship. However, he has not worked out with the team since he was suspended after the incident with Jerich.

Berry is still taking classes during the current quarter, but his lawyer said he will finish the school year and might transfer to another school.

Berry came to Ohio State as a high-profiled recruit. ranked him the fifth-best running back in the class of 2008, 56th-best player that year.

Jersey scrimmage goes to the offense, 55-48; Bellamy, Berry, Pryor & Washington star

The Buckeyes after two weeks in fall camp, had their annual jersey scrimmage in Ohio Stadium on Saturday. The offense won the 140-play scrimmage, 55-48.

It wasn’t a pretty affair, especially after the team took a road trip to Xenia, Ohio. The team bused there on Thursday night and practiced twice Friday in stormy weather before busing back.

Coach Jim Tressel said he planned that trip to simulate the rigors of in-season travel and admitted the team was ‘tired’ and not real impressive at all.

There were some bright spots. Terrelle Pryor accounted for the day’s only touchdown; the defense forced a turnover, a fumble by running back Brandon Saine which was recovered by linebacker Andrew Sweat; there were 6 sacks, 3 by Adam Bellamy; backup quarterback Kenny Guiton was 6 of 16 passing for 40 yards and has moved ahead of Joe Bauserman for the Number 2 quarterback job; Jamaal Berry rushed 17 times for 63 and could beat out Jordan Hall for the Number 3 tailback position and Taurian Washington catching a TD pass from Terrelle Pryor.

Speaking of Pryor, he started the scrimmage slowly at 1 of 6 but finished at 10 of 24 passing for 151 yards with one touchdown and no intereceptions. Pryor’s highlights included a 25-yard pass over the middle to tight end Jake Stoneburner as well as a 25-yard scoring pass to Taurian Washington where Pryor hit him on the move in stride, which allowed him to outrun the defensive pursuit.

The only real negative was that nagging injuries are starting to add up. Saturday’s scrimmage was practice number 20 and six starters either were held out or left early as a precaution. Five of the injured are from the defense.
