WORLD CUP SOCCER: United States plays tiny Slovenia

compiled from staff and wire reports

The United States soccer team plays Slovenia Friday at Ellis Park.

The United States has played twice before at Ellis Park, a downtown stadium with a very high upper deck, like the old Mile High Stadium in Denver. Ellis Park opened in 1928 and holds 55,686 for the World Cup.

In November 2007, the United States beat South Africa 1-0 on a Steve Cherundolo goal. Last June, the Americans took a two-goal lead at halftime against Brazil in the Confederations Cup final only to lose 3-2.

The U.S. has put in alot of hard work over the past two years and it will mean nothing unless they get at least a tie against Slovenia.

Slovenia is ranked 25th in the World Cup, 11 places behind the U.S.

Slovenia beat Algeria 1-0 last week.

Following an opening game tie of 1-1 against favored England last weekend, the U.S. needs at least one point because the English will be facing Algeria in the late game at Cape Town. With a win over the smallest of the 32 nations in the World Cup tournament, the Americans will take a huge step towards reaching the elimination part of the competition for the first time since 2002.

Four years ago, the United States came back from an opening 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic and played to a 1-1 tie with eventual champion Italy. Then they were eliminated for a sloppy 2-1 defeat to Ghana.

An underdog against England, the Americans head into this game a rare World Cup favorite in a matchup of nations at opposite ends of the size scale. At almost 310 million, the United States has the largest population among the 32 World Cup countries. At 2 million, Slovenia has the smallest.

New York Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky gave the United States a 1-0 lead after 12 minutes. But Italy received goals from Giulio Scandella in the second period and Stefano Margoni for a 2-1 lead with 13 minutes left.

Dubinsky set up Ryan Potulny’s power-play goal with 8:52 remaining to force overtime.

Neither team scored in overtime, setting up T.J. Oshie’s heroic play. The St. Louis Blues forward scored on three of five attempts against goalie Daniel Bellissimo.

Ernie Els is carrying the PGA Tour in Tiger’s absence; wins Arnold Palmer Invitational

compiled from staff, wire reports and PGA Tour information

Ernie Els ended up wearing the blue blazer given to the winner of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. On Monday he made two clutch putts for par and escaped trouble from bunker. He said after the tournament he can see himself winning a green jacket in a few weeks at the Masters.

The South African overcame a few anxious and nervous moments with four solid pars to wrap up a 1-under par 71 and win by two shots at Bay Hill in Orlando, Florida, giving him back-to-back wins for the first time in seven years and setting himself up as one of the top favorites at Augusta National.

Els won a four-shot victory in the World Golf Championships at Doral two weeks ago. But he had his work cut out for him at Bay Hill, to be able to claim his 18th career victory on the PGA Tour.

He had a five-shot lead Sunday afternoon with six holes remaining until hitting into the water on number 13 for a double-bogey and hitting into the sand on the next hole for a bogey. Then came the thunderstorms, halting the final round until it resumed on Monday around 12 noon.

Els felt pressure as he was lining up a 6-foot putt for par and he went ahead and sunk it.

With him nursing a one shot over Kevin Na, his iron shot came up short of the 17th green and was on the front of the bunker. Els got out out of that jam and made par.

He finished the tournament at 11-under par 277 and moved to number 7 in the world rankings. Els earned $1.08 million, giving him more than $3 million for the year and puts him atop the PGA Tour money list.

Kevin Na closed with a 69 and shared second with Edoardo Molinari of Italy, who also had a 69. Retief Goosen (69) and Chris Couch (71) tied for fourth. Ohio native Ben Curtis, who started the final round one shot out of the lead, closed with a 74 and finished sixth.

This was Els’ second victory at Bay Hill, the other coming 11 years ago in a 36-hole Sunday because of rain. Els became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2001 to win twice on the Florida PGA Tour swing.  Woods won at Bay Hill and the Players Championship, then made it three in a row when he captured the Masters.
