Clippers win IL West title behind Espino’s pitching

Pablo Espino (file photo)

Right-handed pitcher Pablo Espino just returned to the Columbus Clippers in July with an undefined role.

In the championship season of 2010, he was starter, but in the past month, his role has been either start or relieve.

The talented pitcher scattered two hits while striking out seven batters over seven innings, combining with two pitchers on a two-hitter in leading the Clippers to a 5-0 shutout of the Buffalo Bisons. The win coupled with Lehigh Valley’s 7-4 win in Indianapolis allowed Columbus to win the International League West Division champions.

Espino upped his record to 2-1 on the season with Columbus, but is 8-1 combined with his time with the Akron Aeros.

Nick Hagadone pitched a perfect eighth inning and Josh Judy closed out the game with a quick 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The Columbus Clippers just like their parent club, the Cleveland Indians, are deep in pitching.

One of those talented pitchers is right-hander Jeanmar Gomez.

Gomez led the International League West Division-leading Columbus Clippers to two wins last week.

At home on Tuesday night against Rochester, Gomez pitched 7.0 impressive innings, allowing just one run on six hits and two walks while matching a season-high with seven strikeouts as the Clippers rolled to a 5-1 win.

Gomez earned his second win of the week Sunday afternoon in Buffalo with another strong pitching performance. For his fourth straight start, Gomez surrendered just one run. He went 6.0 innings, scattering five hits and three walks while striking out five in the 10-4 win.

Gomez has lowered his ERA to 2.28 for the season, fourth-best in the International League.

The 23-year-old Gomez is in his second season pitching above the Double-A level. In 2010 he went 8-8 for the Clippers with a 5.20 ERA in 20 starts. He also earned 15 games of experience pitching for the Cleveland Indians.

Gomez is a native of Caracas, Venezuela.

His 2010 stats include: 9 games, 9 starts, 2 complete games, 1 shutout, 6-1 won-loss record, 2.28 ERA, 59.1 innings pitched, 50 hits, 15 runs, 15 earned runs, 21 walsk, 48 strikeouts.

The Columbus Clippers climbed back to the top of the International League West Division by sweeping a doubleheader from the Indianapolis Indians 6-1 and 6-5.

Alex White was very solid for the Clippers, picking ups his first win of the season (1-0). He pitched 5.2 innings, giving up only one run on five hits while striking out eight and walking two.

Sean Gallagher dropped to (0-3) on the season as he pitched only 3.2 innings giving up 5 runs all earned on five hits while walking five and striking out three.

In the nightcap, the Clippers had to battle back from a 5-0 deficit after Indy scored 1 in the first, 2 in the third and 2 in the top of the fifth.

Joe Martinez started for Columbus and went 3.2 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and struck out four. Jensen Lewis (2-0) earned the win.

Reds backup catcher Miller re-signed to Minor League contract

Corky Miller, a very popular player in the Reds clubhouse, refused an outright assignment to the minor leagues and became a free agent.

But the Reds and the veteran have agreed to a minor league contract which is an invitation to Spring training as a non-roster player.

Miller’s valuable asset to the team is his defense and calling games as a catcher. Reds pitchers had a team-best 2.86 ERA in the games he caught while Ryan Hanigan and Ramon Hernandez were nursing injuries on the disabled list.

In 32 games for Cincinnati in 2010, Miller hit .243 with 2 homers and 9 runs batted in. He spent most of the season with the International League West Division champions, the Louisville Bats, the Reds’ Triple-A team.

Clippers lose finale at Toledo; lose division title to Louisville; playoffs next

The Columbus Clippers were hoping to gain some momentum heading into the postseason, and wrap-up the International League West Division at the same time, but the Toledo Mud Hens won their fourth straight over their Ohio rivals, Monday afternoon, 5-2.

Coupled with Louisville’s win over Indianapolis, Columbus will open the playoffs against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, the IL North champions.

Columbus couldn’t muster a hit against Toledo starter Ryan Ketchner (6-4) after Ezequiel Carrera’s home run in the third inning. Ketchner went seven innings, striking out six.

Columbus will open the postseason at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday at Huntington Park. David Huff (8-2) is likely to get the start for the Clippers against the Yankees in game one of the best-of-five-series. The Yankees won five of the eight regular season meetings with the Clippers, but Columbus won the 1992 Governor’s Cup by defeating the Yankees, 3-2.

Scranton has won the IL North five straight years since 2006.
