Clippers offense wakes up and pounds Indianapolis, 10-5

The Columbus Clippers had a closed-door meeting before Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Indians at Huntington Park. After all the team was coming off a shutout loss and they have been playing inconsistently for the past three weeks. Not to mention there is a division title and or wildcard within their grasp.

That meeting with manager Mike Sarbaugh and the coaches proved to be very effective, because Columbus got their offense rolling and hammered Indy, 10-5.

The score was 3-3 going into the fifth when the Clippers to the lead back.

Luke Carlin’s bouncing ball up the middle got past Indians shortstop Pedro Ciriaco and scored both Jordan Brown and Jared Goedert. That 5-3 lead was cut in half in the top of the sixth by Indy, but the offense blew the game open with a five-run seventh, which included Goedert’s 19th home run and RBI’s from Jose Constanza and Josh Rodriguez, along with a two-run triple from Ezequiel Carrera.

The winning pitcher was newcomer Zack McAllister, he’s now 9-11. The loser was Mike Crotta, who falls to 5-9.

The win kept the Clippers in pace with the Louisville Bats, who won earlier Sunday and still holds a 1.5 game advantage in the International League West, with eight games remaining for both teams. A loss by the Buffalo Bisons in Scranton helped Columbus to a 2.5 game lead in the wild card race.
