Dayton Flyers to upgrade football schedule in order to reach playoffs

The Dayton Flyers have always wanted a shot at the schools like Robert Morris and Duquesne, which are a part of the maximum-scholarship Football Championship Subdivision programs that compete for national titles, thinking that they can play a close game and possibly pull off an upset.

In 2010, the Flyers split with two teams from the scholarship Northeast Conference, beating Robert Morris but losing 35-31 at Duquesne.

Robert Morris was in the playoffs last year, winning the NEC’s automatic bid. If the Flyers had beaten Duquesne, they wouldn’t been in the top 20 and the playoffs would’ve been a reality.

Next year, UD will open against Illinois State and in 2013 they’ll open against Youngstown State, both games being on the road.

In those games, Dayton will be out-scholarshipped 63-0.

From 2012 and moving forward, the Flyers are committed to playing scholarship teams from the FCS (formerly Division I-AA) for their three non-conference games in an attempt to get to the postseason playoffs.

The criteria for teams from the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League to earn an at-large berth to the playoffs are to beat two FCS teams that give full rides, win their conference and finish in the Top 20 in the national poll.

In 2010, Dayton missed the top 20 by just a few points at 25th.

In the future, the FCS playoffs will be expanded from 20 to 22 or 24 teams.
