Lack of success at Ole Miss leads Nutt to resign

Two years ago, Mississippi Rebels head coach Houston Nutt seemed to have his football program on the upswing.

The Arkansas native arrived in Oxford, Mississippi after a 10-year career at SEC rival Arkansas and he helped lead the Rebels off to a good start of 18-8 during the first two years which included Cotton Bowl wins over Texas Tech and Oklahoma State in back-to-back years.

The Rebels had not enjoyed that kind of success two seasons in a row in almost 40 years. But everyone overlooked the fact that Nutt achieved success with the players left over from previous head coach Ed Orgeron. He could not upgrade the roster with his own recruits.

That is the reason why on Monday, the 54-year-old Nutt announced he’ll resign at the end of the season. He’ll stay on to coach the final three games against Louisiana Tech, LSU and Mississippi State, according to Rebels athletic director Pete Boone.

Ole Miss has lost 12 straight SEC football games, including the 30-13 debacle last Saturday against Kentucky. The Rebels are a disappointing 2-7, 0-6 in the tough SEC this year.

Nutt, who is earning $2.7 million this season, has a 24-23 record at Ole Miss.

The downward spiral for Nutt and his program was in the 2010 season opener, when Jacksonville State upset the Rebels in double overtime 49-48. The fans in Oxford were appalled and called for his resignation. That was the first time in the school’s football history that the Rebels had lost to a Football Championship Subdivision team.

The Rebels can’t seem to find and keep a football coach for long. The next hiring will be their fifth since 1998 and third since 2007.
