2012 MLS schedule out; Crew starts on road

The Major League Soccer season in 2012 will open on March 10 with six games, and the Columbus Crew will begin the season on the road.

The Crew’s first home game will be on March 24.

Houston, which will have a new stadium this coming season, opens at home on May 12.

Jaguars owner Weaver fires Del Rio & sells team

Jack Del Rio knew the stakes when he went to training camp this season with his Jacksonville Jaguars. His job security became week-to-week once two things occured: 1) when he cut veteran quarterback David Garrard to go with rookie Blaine Gabbert and 2) when owner Wayne Weaver said he needed to make the playoffs to keep his job for a 10th season.

At 3-8 this season, Weaver fired Del Rio. He leaves the North Florida city with a 69-73 record, including 1-2 in two playoff berths. The Jaguars were not able to win the NFL’s AFC South in any of his nine seasons. The division also has Indianapolis, Houston and Tennessee.

Weaver also announced that he was selling the franchise to Illinois businessman Shadid Khan, who was born in Pakistan and is the owner of Flex-N-Gate bumper systems company.

The franchise, born in 1993, is worth $760 million according to Forbes magazine.

The 77-year-old Weaver named defensive coordinator Mel Tucker the interim head coach and gave general manager Gene Smith a three-year contract extension. Smith will head the coaching search.

The 61-year-old Khan’s purchase of the team is subject to NFL approval. League owners will be voting on December 14. If it is approved, the sale will become official January 4.

The Los Angeles Galaxy, who has Major League Soccer’s best home record, will be playing in the league’s title game on their home field in Carson, California.

The Galaxy have advanced to the MLS Cup with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference finals.

The MLS Cup is on November 20 against Houston and the Galaxy are undefeated at home this year.

Mike Magee scored on a David Beckham crossing pass in the 58th minute and Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane also put the ball in the nets for the Galaxy.

Tigers bringing back closer Valverde for 2012

The Detroit Tigers have decided to keep closer Jose Valverde for the 2012 season.

The 33-year-old reliever who is from the Dominican Republic, has also pitched for Arizona and Houston. He is a 3-time All-Star.

Valverde signed a $14 million dollar, two-year deal in 2010 with the team holding a $9 million option for 2012.

The right-hander has been an All-Star twice with Detroit and led the major leagues with 49 saves in 2011.

Pirates improved play nets GM contract extension

The Pittsburgh Pirates have given their general manager Neal Huntington a three-year contract extension throught the 2014 season after having a 2011 season of improvement for the chronically losing franchise.

The extension includes a team option for 2015.

The 42-year-old Huntington replaced Dave Littlefield on September 25, 2007.

The Pirates, always in last-place in the National League Central Division, will finish in fourth ahead of Chicago and Houston.
