What had been rumored for the past three months, came true on Wednesday.

Butler University of Indianapolis, the benchmark school of the Horizon League, will be leaving to go to the Atlantic 10 Conference beginning in the 2013-14 season.

The announcement was made by Butler president James Danko during a news conference.

The move will reunite Butler with Dayton and Xavier, who used to be members of the predecessor of the Horizon League, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.

Butler replaces Temple in basketball. Temple will join the Big East in all sports other than football in 2013-14. Temple’s football team will begin competition in the Big East this fall.

For years, teams in the mid-major conference, Horizon League, have always looked at Youngstown State University as a yearly sweep to pad their won-loss records. But not this year.

The Penguins are much improved with Kendrick Perry one of the reasons why.

Perry scored 28 points to lead the Penguins to an 83-63 win over Loyola of Chicago on Sunday.

YSU is 13-10 overall, 8-5 in the conference.

The win gives Youngstown State their best Horizon League win total since joining the conference 11 years ago.

The Penguins are getting the respect they’ve wanted for years.
