Brendan Gibbons kicked a 37-yard field goal in overtime to give 13th-ranked Michigan to a 23-20 win over #17 Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.

The win ended a comeback to the heights of college football for the Michigan program under first-year head coach Brady Hoke, who led the Wolverines to an 11-2 record a BCS game.

QB Denard Robinson did not dominate the game, but threw touchdown passes of 45 and 18 yards to Junior Hemingway.

Robinson was 9 of 21 passes for 117 yards for 117 yards and an interception and rushed for only 13 yards.

Hemingway was selected as the player of the game for his two-touchdown effort. He finished the game with two pass receptions for 63 yards.

Virginia Tech, who finished the year at 11-3, more than doubled Michigan’s offensive total yardage, 377 to 184, and collected 22 first downs to the Wolverines’ 12 but had trouble scoring TD’s and settle for four field goals in regulation by placekicker Justin Myer, a third-stringer.

Unfortunately, Myer missed on his fifth field goal try from 37 yards out on the opening possession of overtime.

*Michigan’s are 12th in the nation in rushing with 235.7 yards a game, and QB Denard Robinson (96.9-yard average) and RB Fitzgerald Toussaint (91.9) were the big-time playmakers.

*Michigan head coach Brady Hoke turned around Ball State, San Diego State and now Michigan and earned the 2011 Big Ten Coach of the Year honors.

*The Wolverines’ BCS record is 2-3.

* Denard Robinson ended the year with some impressive totals: rushed for 1,163 yards and passed for 2,056 yards and accounted for 34 touchdowns overall.

Virginia Tech beats Georgia Tech in key ACC battle, 28-21

(courtesy of VA Tech athletics via Wikipedia Commons)

The Virginia Tech Hokies had a key game Thursday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division. Not only was it a key game, but a challenging since some of their other games were less than tight.

Tailback David Wilson returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown with 2:23 to play, rallying the number 20 Hokies from a sloppy,  lethargic effort to a 28-21 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Virginia Tech is now 7-2 overall, 5-0 in the ACC Coastal Division. Remember, this is a team which was 0-2 to start the season after losing to Boise State and James Madison of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Georgia Tech lost quarterback Joshua Nesbitt to an injury before the end of the second quarter.

Virginia Tech still has key games left with North Carolina and Miami in the next two weeks before closing their regular season at home against arch-rival Virginia. If they can win those games, they’ll be playing in the ACC title game.

Georgia Tech falls to 5-4, 3-3 in the ACC Coastal Division.
