36-year-old Paul Kariya decided to retire from the National Hockey League on Wednesday after post-concussion symptoms forced him to miss all of last season.

He won the Hobey Baker Award as the top U.S. college hockey player at Maine in 1993 and was chosen by Anaheim with the #4 pick in that year’s draft.

Kariya is best known for his play with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim where he flourished with three 40-goal seasons, a high of 50 in 1995-96 and two years where he garnered 100 points or more.

The left-winger played 15 years in the NHL, playing for Anaheim, Colorado, Nashville and finishing with St. Louis.

The native of Vancouver, British Columbia, scored 402 goals and 587 assists and won the Lady Byng Trophy which is given to the player with the most-gentlemenly qualities.
