Actor George Lindsey, who played the comical Goober Pyle on the 1960′s TV series The Andy Griffith Show, died on Sunday, he was 83.

According to a press release from the Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home, Lindsey died in Nashville, Tennessee after a brief illness.

Originally, Lindsey was asked to audition for the role of gas station attendant Gomer Pyle on the The Andy Griffith Show, but lost the part to Jim Nabors.

In 1964, with the popularity of Gomer Pyle, the show’s producers created a spin-off show, Gomer Pyle, USMC and his cousin, Goober Pyle to take his place on the The Andy Griffith Show.

So, for the next 7 seasons, four on The Andy Griffith Show and three on the spin-off series, Mayberry R.F.D., Lindsey played the fun-loving gas station attendant.

Lindsey also reprised his role of Goober Pyle on the TV Show, Hee-Haw.

Lindsey was born in Fairfield, Alabama in 1928, was active in theatre in high school, served in the military and worked briefly as a teacher.

His early works on television included roles on The Rifleman, The Twilight Zone and Gunsmoke.

Lindsey, Andy Griffith, now 85 and Nabors, now 81, all remained close over the years, keeping in touch by phone calls.
