Ohio Bobcats 75 Hampton Pirates 67; Offutt scores 23 for Ohio

 

Former Ohio State player, Walter Offutt, who has found a home with Ohio University, scored 23 points last night in his team’s 75-67 win over 0-3 Hampton University.

The Bobcats are 4-0 to start the new season.

Offutt (Indianapolis, Ind.) connected on four of his 12 field goal attempts but made his way to the free-throw line 15 times, sinking 13 shots from the stripe. He was joined in double figures by Ivo Baltic’s 16 points and D.J. Cooper’s 12. David Bruce led all scorers for Hampton, scoring 20 points while also grabbing 12 boards.

Ohio shot 21-of-49 (42.9 percent) from the field and connected on 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) of its shots from distance. The Bobcats were able to force the Pirates into 24 turnovers, taking advantage of these miscues by scoring 32 points from them. Ohio swatted away eight Hampton shots in the win.

The Pirates shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) including a 20 percent (2-of-10) from three-point range. Hampton out-rebounded Ohio by 17, collecting 43 rebounds to Ohio’s 26.

Hampton Pirates Ellis named SBN Black College All-American

Hampton University senior defensive end Kenrick Ellis was named to the 2010 SNB Sports Black College All-America Team, the American Urban Radio Networks announced this week.

It’s another in a long line of postseason accolades for Ellis of  West Palm Beach, Florida, the CFPA FCS Defensive Tackle of the Year. Ellis was also named to the Phil Steele, Walter Camp, Associated Press and Sports Network FCS All-America Teams, on top of being named to the BoxToRow.com/BASN HBCU Defensive Player of the Year.

Ellis was also a First Team All-MEAC selection in 2010. Hampton University plays in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Ellis was second on the team in tackles with 94 total tackles (34 solo, 60 assisted), was also second on the team with 15.0 tackles for loss totaling 37 yards and was second on the team with 2.0 sacks on the season.

Ellis recorded a career-high 16 tackles (seven solo, nine assisted) at Howard on September 11 on his way to earning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, and he also had 15 tackles (two solo, 13 assisted) at North Carolina Central on October 9.

Both of his sacks came at Howard.

The 2010 SBN Sports Black College All-American Team will be honored at the 37th annual BCAA Awards Luncheon on Saturday, February 12 at the Doubletree Resort Orlando in Orlando, Florida. The co-hosts for the event are Doug Banks and DeDe McGuire of the Doug Banks Radio Show. FOX Network analyst, actor and former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan will be the keynote speaker for the occasion, which also includes an NFL “Skull Session” dinner and BCAA Honorary Committee Dessert Reception.

Special invited guests include Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris, Pittsburgh Steelers co-owner John Stallworth, Arizona Cardinals cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Cleveland Browns defensive end Marcus Benard.
