Columbus Crew drops 2-1 decision in Guatamela City against Municipal in CONCACAF action

The Columbus Crew lost 2-1 to Municipal on Wednesday night at Estadio Nacional in Guatemala City in match five of CONCACAF Champions League Group B play. Former LA Galaxy forward Guillermo Ramirez netted both goals for Municipal while defender Andy Iro scored for the Crew.

Daylong heavy rain continued through the match leaving the pitch at Estadio Nacional with standing water in several places. Players struggled with footing and balls skipped in some spots and came to a halt in other spots on the pitch.

The result left the Crew with nine points and dropped it into second place in Group B, one point behind Santos, which beat Joe Public 5-1.

Municipal climbed to eight points, but will have to travel to Mexico to face the tough Santos team in its final match on October 19. Columbus will travel to face already eliminated Joe Public on October 21. Only the first two teams in each group qualify for the quarter finals.

Columbus returns to action this Saturday, October 2, when it welcomes the San Jose Earthquakes to Crew Stadium. The match starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised regionally by ONN-TV.

U.S. women advances to second round in world basketball championships

Diana Taurasi pumped in 15 points to lead the United States over France 81-60 and finish first in Group B at the women’s basketball championships.

Candice Dupree and Tina Charles each adding 10 points for the Americans, now 3-0.

Endene Miyem led France, now 2-1 with 15 points.

The United States women will play Canada, Belarus and Australia in the second round. France and Greece also advanced to play in that round as well.

The top four teams from each second-round group will play in the quarterfinals that begin on Friday. the semifinals will be Saturday and the gold medal game October 3.

Crew shuts down Joe Public of Trinidad, 3-0 in CONCACF Champions League contest

Goals four minutes apart by Leandre Griffit and Jason Garey early in the second half jump-started the Columbus Crew to a 3-0 win over Trinidad’s Joe Public Tuesday night in a CONCACAF Champions League Group B match.

Griffit struck in the 47th minute with a deft shot from 17 yards on the left side that skipped into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Garey added a goal in the 51st minute with a header off an Emmanuel Epko cross pass. Steven Lenhart came off the bench to score the final goal with an assist to Dilly Duka in the 79th minute.

Goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum made three saves to post the shutout in his third straight Champions League start.

Columbus has six points through three matches, while Joe Public has one halfway through group play.


* Goes to show how much depth Columbus has and still won the game. Regular players Frankie Hejduk, Brian Carroll, Guillermo Barros Schelotto and William Hesmer were all given the night off.

* Emilio Renteria served a one-game suspension for accumulated cautions.

* The Crew had 3 injured players who did not play Robbie Rogers, Danny O’Rourke and Gino Padula, all with knee problems.

* Joe Public only dressed 16 players due to visa problems for four players and suspensions to Jevon Morris and Jason Springer.

* Former Crew star and Trinidad native Stern John was in attendance at the match.

* Columbus returns to action this Saturday, September 18, when it will be hosting the Seattle Sounders at Crew Stadium. The “Silence the Sounders” match will start at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised regionally on ONN-TV.

Crew wins 1-0 behind Ekpo & Gruenebaum to open CONCACAF Champions League

Emmanuel Ekpo provided a highlight-reel goal and goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum was solid with several saves leading the Columbus Crew to a 1-0 win Wednesday over Municipal of Guatemala. The game at Crew Stadium drew 5,745 fans in the opening match of group play of the 2010-2011 CONCACAF Champions League.

Ekpo scored the game-winner in the 14th minute. After taking a pass from Frankie Hejduk 30 yards out, he split two defenders, then flicked the ball with his right foot past defender Pablo Melgar and regained control in the right side of the box for a strike that hit the left post and settled into the goal.

The win advances Columbus in a tie for first place in Group B with Santos Laguna, but the Mexican side lead group on goal differential. Santos beat Joe Public 5-2 in Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday night.


* Forward Steven Lenhart served a one-game suspension incurred by the red card he was given in the second leg of the 2009-2010 CCL quarterfinals at Toluca on March 17.

* Midfielder Eddie Gaven started in the midfield after missing two games because of a concussion.

* Emmanuel Ekpo’s goal was his first in any competition since May 9, 2009 against Kansas City.

* The Crew returns to MLS action this Saturday, August 21 against Colorado at Crew Stadium at 7:30 p.m. in a game that will be televised live regionally on ONN-TV.
