Illinois scores four in last-at bat to drop baseball Buckeyes

The Ohio State baseball team was leading 4-1 on Thursday against Illinois and all they needed was three outs and the game was theirs in the Big Ten Tournament.

But Illinois, the Big Ten co-champion of the regular season, had other ideas as they came up with a last at bat comeback win. The Illini scored four runs in the ninth inning for its 19th comeback win of the season and stunned the Buckeyes, 5-4 at Huntington Park.

The loss puts the Buckeyes into the elimination game against Minnesota.

The Buckeyes, who dropped to 26-26, had ridden the home run power of Brian DeLucia and Greg Solomon and another solid start from Brett McKinney to build a 4-1 lead going into the ninth inning.

But the Illini, facing OSU’s closer Josh Dezse for a second inning, started to time his pitches and bunched five hits and a walk to pull off its fifth consecutive last-at bat win. Davis Hendrickson hit the first pitch he saw from Andrew Armstrong into left field to score the winning run.

Ohio State ups its record to 19-18, 9-6 Big Ten) and are keeping pace with the two teams in front of them, Michigan State and Purdue.

Ohio State’s baseball team jumped out to an early lead and hung on to beat Western Michigan, 4-3, behind a strong outing from starter Drew Rucinski and a solid day at the plate from Matt Streng on Friday afternoon at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Rucinski picked up his first win of the season, going seven innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out three. Streng went 3-for-4 at the plate.

OSU wasted no time in getting to Broncos starting pitcher Brian Stroud. Tim Wetzel walked to lead off the games and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Engle. After a groundout by Brad Hallberg, Brian DeLucia singled to right to drive in Wetzel. DeLucia then went to third on a single by Streng and scored on a perfectly-placed and executed double steal to put the Bucks up 2-0 after the first inning.

OSU extended the lead to 4-0 in the second inning. Ryan Cypret singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Ciamacco before Greg Solomon drilled a 1-0 pitch to the wall in center for an RBI triple. Wetzel came to the plate and scorched a ground ball up the middle. WMU shortstop Patrick Duncan was playing in and made a diving stop but his throw home was too late to get Solomon as the Buckeyes scored another run.
