Walker Cup won by Britain & Ireland

Britain and Ireland regained the Walker Cup from the United States for the first time since 2003, knocking off the Americans in the afternoon singles for a 14-12 win in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Walker Cup, run by the USGA and R & A, is a biennial event contested in the odd years between the U.S., Great Britain and Ireland.

The event is in honor of George Herbert Walker, grandfather and namesake of former United States president George H.W. Bush.

The next three events have been scheduled. In 2013, the tournament will be in Southampton, New York; 2015 in Lytham St. Anne’s Lancaster, England and 2017 in Los Angeles, California.

The hosts needed 13.5 points to win the title and took an insurmountable lead after17-year-old Welshman Rhys Pugh won his singles match against U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft 2 1nd 1 and Steven Brown halved with Blayne Barber.

Andy Murray gets revenge to advance ( photo)

MASON, OHIO — Andy Murray, the 4th-ranked tennis player in the world, had to wait five months but he got the revenge he was looking for.

Murray, who represents Great Britain, lost to #50-ranked American Alex Bogomolov, Jr., in Miami five months ago.

But on Thursday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, he was able to beat Bogomolov, Jr., 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Murray had trouble in the second set as the two players were tied at one point in the set at 4-4, but he was able to take control of the match which lasted 1 hour, 41 minutes.

U.S. earns championship game with 10-0 win

A 10-run fourth inning powered the United States to the championship game of the World Cup of Softball.

Stacy May-Johnson hit a grand slam and Christi Orgeron had a three-run double in the fourth inning to fuel the win.

The U.S. beat Great Britain 10-0 in Oklahoma City.

The Americans will face the 2008 Olympic gold medal team Japan in the title game.

Andy Murray upsets Roger Federer in Shanghai Masters final

Andy Murray took advantage of the errors by Roger Federer to win the Shanghai Masters in China for his second title of the year on Sunday, 6-3, 6-2.

Murray broke Federer’s serve four times while holding off six break points.He had six service aces to only three for the Swiss star. Federer had trouble using his forehand during the match.

Murray, who is from Great Britain, did not drop a set in the tournament and has Federer’s number, having beaten him eight times in 13 meetings, including the last two. Murray’s win on Sunday was the most one-sided match the two have played to date.

Even with the loss, Roger Federer will move up to become the second-ranked player as a result of reaching the final. He was trying to win the 64th title of his career, which would have tied him with Pete Sampras for fourth place on the all-time list.

With the win, Andy Murray became the fourth player to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals in London, joining Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. The World Tour Finals will be played in November.
