Reds decide to keep Chapman’s 100-plus mph fastball in the closer’s role; starting rotation is set

The Cincinnati Reds have decided to keep their fireballer closer Aroldis Chapman in that role for the 2013 season.

There had been speculation with Chapman starting this spring, that he was going to be moved into the rotation.

Chapman has said all along that he would prefer to close games.

The Reds have a solid rotation in Johnny Cueto, Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, Homer Bailey and Mike Leake. That quintet started every game but one during the 2012 season, the best in Major League Baseball.

Cueto will start the Opening Day Game on April 1 against the Los Angeles Angels at Great American Ball Park.

Reds proving they can win without Votto; beat Brewers, 6-2

The Cincinnati Reds are 4-2 since Joey Votto had to go on the disabled list earlier in the week with a torn knee cartilage.

Each game, a different set of players are leading the team to victory.

In Saturday’s 6-2 win over the slumping, defending NL Central Division champion Milwaukee Brewers, Ryan Ludwick, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce led the offense. Ludwick and Phillips hit home runs and Bruce had two more hits.

The Reds are 6-2 against the Brewers this season.

They basically put the game away early in the first inning by scoring four runs off losing pitcher Yovani Gallardo, who drops to 8-7 on the season.

The oldest member of the Reds starting pitchers, Bronson Arroyo at 35 years old, rebounded from Monday’s three-inning stint vs. Arizona, a 5-3 loss, by pitching solidly in six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He’s 5-6 in 2012.

Ludwick’s first-inning homer into the upper deck in left field, made it 74 straight games in Great American Ball Park with a home run. It’s the longest such streak since Coors Field produced 80 games in a row in 2002-03, according to STATS LLC.

Reds turn on power to help Bailey win for first time vs. Brewers, 3-1

Coming into Friday’s matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers, Reds pitcher Homer Bailey had his ups-and-downs over the years and was 0-5 in 10 career games.

Homer Bailey

But that all changed as the tall Texan upped his record to 9-6 overall and has won four straight starts for the first time in his career.

Scott Rolen

Bailey tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts in hurling eight innings to beat the Brewers for the first time, 3-1 allowing Cincinnati to hold onto first-place in the National League Central Division.

Zack Cozart

The Reds moved to 13 games over .500 for the first time in 2012 as they won for the ninth time in 11 games and rode the home run bats of Zack Cozart, Jay Bruce and Scott Rolen.

With Cozart’s homer, that means there have been 73 consecutive games with a home run at Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park. It is the longest streak since Coors Field in Denver had 80 in a row from 2002 and 2003.

The Brewers starting pitcher Marco Estrada falls to 0-4 after pitching seven innings, giving up seven hits and allowing the three homers.

Reds’ closer Aroldis Chapman earned his 16th save in 20 chances. He hit 100 mph twice in 13 pitches and struck out two batters.

Due to the unforgotten brawl from this past season, which resulted in eight players being suspended, Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati have both decided that a change of scenery is in order for their annual rivalry game.

For the next two seasons, the annual basketball game between the two Queen City schools will be played in downtown Cincinnati at U.S. Bank Arena.

The arena, which seats 17,000 for basketball, was opened on September 9, 1975. It is the regular home for the Cincinnati Cyclones hockey team of the ECHL.

U.S. Bank Arena sits on the Ohio River behind the leftfield scoreboard of Great American Ball Park, home of the Cincinnati Reds.
