The Cleveland Indians have found a pitcher who could fill the void in their starting staff to replace Fausto Carmona, who is on baseball’s restricted list as he faces false identity charges in the Dominican Republic.

The Tribe has signed free agent pitcher Jon Garland to a minor league contract.

The 32-year-old Garland went 1-5 with a 4.33 ERA in with 9 starts for the Dodgers last season.

He won 14 games for the Padres in 2010.

The right-hander has won at least 12 games seven times and had two 18-win seasons as the ace of the Chicago White Sox.

Garland has also pitched for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Arizona. He has pitched twice for the Dodgers.

His career totals includes a 132-119 won-loss record, 4.32 ERA with 1,124 strikeouts.

Garland, who had shoulder surgery last July, will be in Goodyear, Arizona next week to take a physical. If he passes all the tests, he’ll officially sign the Indians’ contract and will have a chance to make the team’s starting rotation.

Reds sign #1 draft pick Stephenson before deadline

The Cincinnati Reds beat the dealine and have signed their 2011 first-round Draft pick Robert Stephenson. The right-hander just out of high school received a $2 million bonus.

A team that does not sign its first-or-second-round pick will receive a compensatory pick in the 2012 Draft. That selection will be at the same spot, plus one slot. For instance, the Reds would have received the 28th overall selection if they did sign Stephenson.

Stephenson’s backup plan was that if he hadn’t signed a contract, he was ready to play baseball for the University of Washington.

The 18-year-old, was the 27th overall selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Alhambra High School in Martinez, California. As a senior, he was 8-2 with a 1.19 ERA in 76.2 innings and he threw two no-hitters.

It is believed that Stephenson will start off his pro career in rookie ball in Goodyear, Arizona.
