The Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday signed right-handed reliever Michael Wuertz to a Minor League contract. Wuertz has reported to the organization’s complex for extended spring training in Goodyear, Arizona.
The 33-year-old Wuertz spent 2011 with the A’s and had a 6.68 ERA 33 2/3 innings over 39 games. He missed a large part of the season due to hand and wrist injuries and was released in October.

Once considered a quality setup man, Wuertz has a 21-11 lifetime record with a 3.71 ERA and 444 strikeouts in 426 gamesĀ with the Chicago Cubs and Oakland A’s from 2004-11.

There has been a roster move involving the Dayton Dragons and the Bakersfield Blaze in the Cincinnati Reds farm system.
Infielder James Ewing has been promoted from the low Single-A Dayton Dragons of the Midwest League to the advanced Single-A Bakersfield Blaze of the California League.
Infielder Brandon Dailey has been promoted to the Dragons from extended spring training in Goodyear, Arizona.
Ewing made his first appearance in a pro game since July 5, 2009 when he started at shortstop for Dayton on Saturday, April 7, 2012, going 3-for-5. That was his only appearance with the Dragons.
Dailey spent most of the 2011 season with the Goodyear Reds in the Arizona League. He batted .298 with one home run and 27 RBI’s, playing in 43 games. Dailey also played in three games with the Dragons in September after the Arizona League season ended.
The 20-year-old Dailey is a native of Brantford, Ontario.

The other split-squad game did not favor the Cincinnati Reds as the San Francisco Giants won 6-4 in Goodyear, Arizona.
The Giants had their chance to knock Homer Bailey around the park like every other team he has faced this spring.
Bailey, allowed four runs and six hits in 3.1 innings of work, raising in five starts and ERA of 7.98.
The tall Texan will either go to Louisville or start the season in the Reds bullpen.

Lefty Jeff Francis may have hurt his chances to capture a spot in the Cincinnati Reds starting pitching rotation.
In Tuesday’s 8-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners, Francis allowed seven hits and three runs in five innings at Goodyear, Arizona.
Brandon Phillips had two hits and Zack Cozart had a run-scoring double, his fourth extra-base hit in four games for the Reds.

Eventhough it is spring training, the Cincinnati Reds are scoring runs big time.
They roughed up Cleveland Indians ace pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez for five runs, only one earned, in one inning in his 2012 spring debut on Sunday, in winning 8-6 in Goodyear, Arizona in Cactus League action.
Homer Bailey and Aroldis Chapman, both competing for the fifth spot in the rotation, threw two innings each.
Bailey allowed three runs and four hits on 32 pitches. He gave up a three-run homer to Shelley Duncan.
Chapman allowed one run, two hits, a walk and struck out three.
