The Columbus Clippers just keep rolling on and on as the winning streak reached nine games with an 8-5 Friday night win over the Gwinnett Braves in Georgia.

The Clippers were down 5-3 and had to rally to win.

The two-out magic took place for the Clippers in the eighth inning when with a runner on, Luis Valbuena delivered in a big way for the Clippers with a two-run homer that tied the game at 5 apiece.

In the top of the ninth, the Clippers were determined to get the lead for good. Lonnie Chisenhall walked to lead off the inning. Chad Huffman was hit by a pitch. After Travis Buck sacrificed, the bases were loaded when Jason Kipnis was walked intentionally to set up an inning ending double play. Jerad Head struck out for the second out. The next batter was Luke Carlin and he promptly deposited a three-run double between the outfielders for a three-run double and the Clippers led 8-5.

Josh Judy came on in the bottom of the ninth as he successfully got his 4th save of the season. Zach Putnam earned his second win of the season (2-0) while Stephen Marek was stuck with the loss (0-2)

Xavier gets big win over Georgia

(courtesy of Xavier athletics)

The Xavier men’s basketball team at this point of the season over the years, have over 20 wins and are set for a certain NCAA Tournament bid.

But this year at 17-6 overall, they are below the bubble in a season that has seen them lose key players to injuries. But they are still dominating the A-10 Conference at 8-1.

But the Musketeers stepped out of conference play to take on Georgia and won, 65-57. A game that will help in their quest to get into this year’s NCAA tourney.

Tu Holloway led the way with 18 points, all in the second half.

Georgia, from the SEC, drops to 16-7.
